HELP, how to make my music more bouncy!

I've been working on some music for a while now... I feel like I'm getting there, but I've felt like there's a couple of things missing... I sent a demo to Avigmatic records and his reply was that the track was too linear and needs more bounce...

I personally could not agree more, it's just putting that into cubase is what I'm having a problem with. I need to change up the percussion and have more transitions...

the percussion part is what I'm having a problem with...

I was wondering if anyone could post how say Vibe Tribe and Sesto Sento and the big artists do the percussion, example hat, snare, rim shot...

kinda how they sit in a 4 bar loop... I hope I don't get flamed for this, but you have to learn the technique of the masters to become a master.

any examples on a grid or even better screen shots? kits to use? effects?

I hope someone can help me out... I'm in Vancouver and there isn't too many people I can call up or drop by...

the tracks I've made are here...

(Not a blatent plug, BTW)

well,
if anyone could help me out...
I'd really appreciate it...

smiles.

i don't know what you mean by 'bouncy' but percussion-wise you can do the following:

search for oldschool drumloops, eq them properly and put them below your other already established percussion (normal hihats and stuff). be sure to cut the drumloop and reorder it such that it fits the track. at least high pass it, you can lower the high freqs a bit to make place for your normal closed and opened hihat stuff. i like to boost the mids a bit. then you can add some distortion/bit crusher to it as well. combine loops, if you want. make them change for breaks or once in a while, to add groove. try it out. ah, and just out of curiosity: post a short sample of the song, with muted loop and unmuted loop if you wan't (i'd certainly like to hear it!)

cheers!

maybe you need to work more with velocity and accents, and use more delay on perc... just a tiny bit of delay will change the picture dramaticly..

And like my brother says, you can find lots of places to place hits. listen to the track "cripple" by Alternate Vision, listen to the rhythm...
Good luck

Organix,

I ve listened to your track called "off the moon" . If you accept my humble opinion, I d say that your track has positive points that should be kept and negative points that need to be worked.
On positive points I d say that the drum and bass conversation is nice, the bassline is cool (regarding notes and sound itself), I like the voices and the overall design. By the way your basslines notes remind me alot the "blade runner" movie main theme (did you get inspired by it??.
On negative points I d say it misses some more powerful lead synths ( the one you use sounds thin and week, don t know if its because of the synth itself or because of the way you programed it) and some extra melodies. Also you could try to give the bass and kick a little more swing by adding sidechain effect with a clear and noticible ratio and threshold.
Keep in mind that the greatest artists and tracks are the ones who can makes us feel diferent emotions during the performance, so maybe you should give some high energy and low energy contrast between different moods inside this track. I d say your track is 60 to 70 % ready, and the points missing are really details that will bring more creative aspects and will enhance the experience of who is listening to your track.
Keep doing your nice job and let us know about his track evolution.

tsabeat - is there somekind of swing fader in cubase or is groove templates the only way... it would be cool if it had something like in FL studio...

i would like to have some more info on swing/shuffle.. and how to achieve it in cubase without having to move every note manually...

yes, adjusting track delays (sometimes only very slightly e.g. a few milliseconds) is a great way of injecting some 'feel' into rhythmic parts. depending on your sequencer there are ways to add 'shuffle' or 'swing' as well.

experiment with ghost hits for percussion. this is when you have another track playing the same sample at the same time (e.g. a snare) but at a lower volume. your ears don't perceive the two separate notes but it can add pumping-ness and character to otherwise plain percussive patterns.

as someone else said, play around with velocities. also try shifting midi notes a few clicks back or forth. small changes like this tend to have a cumulative effect

also try sidechaining elements of your track other than the kick + bass. sidechained percussive notes can interact really nicely, even lead / fx sounds can as well.

finally, i'm also a fan of the never-enough-automation route. i tend to automate all sorts of controls, synths and VSTis, just to see what difference it makes. sometimes you get really cool artefacts which are inspiring, and sometimes it sounds like distilled ass, but whatever - you takes what you gets etc. etc.

ess765...

at Avigmatic records they said the same thing on the melodies and leads too. Your opinion is greatly appreciated...

the bassline didn't come from bladerunner... haven't seen that movie in years... could have sat in my subconscience though...

I do my bass and kick audio, and they don't overlap. I could use volume on some of the bass notes to create a "velocity"

the funny thing is, I can hear how I want the track to sound in my head, but getting that down in Cubase is a different story all together.

I do feel this track is 60-70%, I was pretty hesitant to send it out... was mainly hoping for feedback, and some hints...

would anyone here be interested in having a go at it, if I put it up as a wavefile with out percussion?

that could be fun...

Buy a pogo stick, and process your tracks through the pogo stick for the ultimate in track bounce, dont forget to tune the spring stiffness for optimal bounce levels!

SX has a percentage-based shuffle slider in the quantize menu.

Another way of creating a nice bounce without a drum pad is to record yourself drumming along with your track (on a table for example) and use this recording to create a groove template and/or rex-file. At least, it works for me. Turning off quantize when programming beats also helps.
