I'm trying to get started with psy-esque music production. I own an SH-201, which is interfaced with my computer, but it kind of sucks. I'd love to get more hardware, but my finances won't really allow for it. So at this point, it looks like I'm going to need to acquire some programs, however, I'm kind of overwhelmed by all the possibilities.

I would really love to be able to play something on my keyboard, and have it be converted into midi data and become a pattern in a software sequencer. Then I could modulate it as necessary.

Also, I'd like to be able to "play" samples as though they were instruments.

Please inform me of the best (and cheapest) way to make this possible... what programs I would need, DAWs, VSTs, whatever. Thanks!

If you're looking for a really cheap way to get started with this, I'd look into Reaper...

http://www.cockos.com/reaper/

It has a fully functional demo which never runs out and goes on the honor system, you buy it if you like it. Even though it's inexpensive it's a very capable sequencer.

I prefer Cubase, but it's much more expensive for someone starting out.
http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/musicproduction/cubase5_product.html

Also check KVR http://www.kvraudio.com

If you do a search in the plugin directory you can find lots of great free effects and instruments.

In order to play samples as instruments you need some sort of sample play back instrument such as a software sampler.

Ableton has a deal right now which gets you they're software sampler when you buy Ableton 8.
http://www.ableton.com/

Otherwise there are some free solutions for software samplers such as...
Short Circuit http://www.vemberaudio.se/shortcircuit.php

For payware the most capable is probably Kontakt 3

http://www.native-instruments.com/#/en/products/producer/kontakt-3/

Anyway good luck with getting started and read around here on the forum and try demos to see what you might want to use.

I personally own Cubase 5 and Ableton 8 and I am happy using those two for various things.

#1 find something that seems to work good for you and then "stick with it" don't change your software every week.

Pirate them all, see which one you work with best, and buy that one.

i was going to say pretty much the exact same thing as psylevation:

reaper + kvraudio.com

everything you need to keep you busy for a few years. after that, you'll be in a better position to actually evaluate pros and cons of the rest. you can certainly pirate them all, but that probably won't do you any good, unless you are really committed and have loads of free time.

understand the principles first and the rest will follow.           https://soundcloud.com/dead-end-dance

IMHO you should start learning from very beginning Cubase. If I need to start learning all from beginning thet is what I would go for. Now dont get me wrong here I didnt say thet FL or Raper or Live are bad DAWs, far from it, but imo in Cubase you have bether over view on your aragment, faster work with MIDI, faster and easyer cuting, editing, reversing and much more things. Still you need to try various programs and to finde one that fits you. But sooner or later it will be Cubase

OK guys now you can start flameing me           Never let computers to win a game! :)

Well thanks for all your suggestions. I actually already had Reaper. But the thing is, I don't want to sit there learning programs... I want to make music. But ah well, I guess there's no other way.

No, there is no other way. But you don't have to be an expert at your DAW to make great music. When you know the basic workflow you can start making great music, advanced functions can be learned in speciffic situations when they are needed.
It's just like photoshop, you can make GREAT artwork with only the basic tools and a little skill

Its like saying you want to play piano without learning how to play
piano. Of course you have to learn, that the way to
get good results.           Now say the magic words: Bleep Bleep Deep Deep Wham.....

What u should understand from very beginning is that there is no shortcut to making songs. There are no special and secret synts thats read your mind and produce sound from it It is hard work and non stop learning. 80% hardwork and learning 20 % fun. As you will learn more and more you will realise that you know less and less it sound very wierd but its like that. Maybe before you start working with daws etc. you should read a lot about notes, freqs, harmonics... good thing to start is book "Ravens spiral guide" its totaly free and it is pure gold for someone new understanding some points. Also read tutorials from yor synths as stupid as they look ther is a lot infos. Learn what are waveforms ( saw, sqare, sine...) I strongly recomend you to take some time before you jump into daws and learn some theory first. Belive me it would be much easyer that way.           Never let computers to win a game! :)
