I recently moved and was not able to fit two of my computer monitors along with all of my studio gear for a Cross Country ride in my tiny little VW.
The monitors I head before were junk from the 90's.
I am just confused on which way I want to go now and don't have a clue about what's good.
The dilemma is the choice between one large or two small. Or maybe even one slightly bigger then the other one.
I loved working with two monitors and being able to use one monitor for just my sequencer and the other for vst's.
I don't know how it is to work with one big monitor and I assume that since you would have so much space you could kind of split the screen in two and have your vst's and such on the right and sequencer on the left. Getting one large monitor would look better on the desk and would be great for watching movies since I don't have a tv and don't plan on getting one.
What's your take on this and which do you prefer?
And what is a good brand and which one would you go for. I am looking at spending around $500 for the two or just one single one. Thank you

iŽd take 2 x 22" widescreens, iŽd get a freak out with just one screen.
make sure that you got the same screen twice, not two different ones.
i got 2 x 24" and i dont want to miss the workspace anymore!
cheers

thanx septa..
that monitor is pretty cheap.. i remember looking at 24" monitors not too long ago and the prices were around $400.. very glad i waited
The desk I got now is 54" which is not enough space to have two 24" monitors between two studio monitors.
With the speakers all the way at the corners without the doubt of flipping over and giving me a heart attack it seems that I have 37" of space between them.
This really sux because it going to be very hard fitting two monitors. I would like one to be 24" and have a wide viewing angle and have great colors and the other one I really don't care about.
I am hoping I could fit 24" and 17".
The reason why I would like to have a decent 24" is because me and my girlfriend watch an occasional movie on my daw because we don't have a tv and the sound makes you feel like you are in a movie theater. hehe

if you go with 2 23"s, with the money you will be saving (~150) you can invest in monitor stands and move them off your table. not only will this free up the space on your desk, but your imaging should improve (granted, you set everything up correctly, equidistant triangle, tweeter at ear level, and all that). another option is to go to a local hardware store and buy a dozen cinder/concrete blocks and just stack those. they are heavy as fuck and will be much more stable than majority of monitor stands you can get. and will only cost you like 20 bucks.

I don't think my girlfriend will approve of cinder blocks in our living room. lol..
We do have a guest room which would make a great studio space but it is twice as small as the living room area and the acoustics would suck without any treatment which I don't have any of. Eventually I plan to make it my studio room and treat it with rock wool but for now the living room wins.
I will also look into some monitor stands because it would just be awesome to have 2 24" or 2 23"
Septa that monitor you suggested looks like a bang for the buck and I am almost about to pull a trigger on one. But I know Acer is a cheap brand and whenever I am in a store and look at monitors Acer just seems like it is missing color compared to HP or LG monitors.
Do you have this one and think it is good? |

you can always cover the blocks with some pretty beach blankets... cangas... whatever they are called. or some material like that. i have 2 brazilian flags covering mine. but if that's not acceptable, feel free to drop 200 bucks on something that will serve the same function and look "pretty."
they acers look fine to me. like i said, the richness of color or sharpness or whatever is just not a high priority for me. naturally, there will be better ones. but you'll have to pay more for those. but to my untrained eyes (no photoshop, games, movies on these), the quality is absolutely fine.
since your budget was 500 and if the color is so important for you, then go for more expensive ones. but if you'd rather spend the difference on something more useful, then the acers will be just fine.

I would suggest not going with Acers if possible. I've had 3 different models over the past 5 years or so and at least one pixel on each died within the first year..took care of them too and didn't even use them that much.

At my work I use 2 of those acers that septa linked to. Been here about half a year and I really like them w/ no problems. Monitors seem to be a toss up as far as how long they'll last. I've seen people have trouble with expensive ones and people have no trouble with cheap ones...

word. pick any expensive piece of equipment and go read reviews on the newegg. there's always going to be at least one dude who's shit was royally fucked up from the get-go and he's mad as hell and swears off this brand for life. i've had 2 22" for about 2 years now and never had any issues with them. but i'm sure these acers are cheap for a reason. so if you'd rather pay a little more for some "quality," there are plenty of options out there. but for me in this case it's just not worth paying more for quality.

^ Yes, but also keep in mind that there will always be a disproportionate amount of bad reviews for any product online. In my experience the average rating usually doesn't accurately represent the quality of the product because people are much more willing to comment when something is wrong.

hey guys just in case anyone is wondering what i went with, I went with the HP lp2475w.
I am amazed at the quality of this monitor.
It has H-IPS panels.
I read a lot of reviews and this one seems to be top of the line 24 inch. |
