Hi all. I've been browsing this great forum for a while now, and now it's time to request some help from you guys.

Here's a track that I'm in the process of making right now:

I feel there's something missing or wrong with it, but I can't for the life of me figure out what it is. Any ideas and comments on how to improve it? I think it's something with the structure of the song that does it, and I also think that it needs to be filled out a bit with some more sounds and such, but I've become "home blind" from sitting with it for a while now, so any ideas and constructive criticism are most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Noone has any ideas or comments? I'm not just looking for problems, my main reason for posting this is to be able to evaluate my stuff, and having extra ears and minds (you guys) certainly helps with that, so I can easier find out what I'm doing wrong and right. Oh, if you hear something but can't really find the right words, please try anyway, I'll try to understand the best I can.

Cheers

i'll commit but you may not like it.

the quality is allright. no complaints.

the melody for me is a wee bit cheesy. like the 'Beverley-hills cop' theme song was.

in parts it is very dull\uninteresting

there u have it. hope i was constructive with my critisim.

maybe work on making things interesting in your own unique way.
maybe scratch this song and start a new. it could help your creativity

acttualy i don't agree with you at all elisdee.
i thing it's nice track. i enjoyed listen to it. the mix is pretty good, i mean the balance between the sounds, but the sounds themselves not good enough. the structure is good. it's interesting for me. just like frepp himself said, more sounds are needed (specially groove elements at the parts that sould be rocking).the melody ins't bad, the only thing that i didn't like about it is that question anser thing, when the melody answeres 1 oct below (2:57 for example).
the bassline is ok, not rocking, but ok, don't waste time on it meanwhile because you have bigger problems. the kick is weak. change it and put also closed hh on it. the snare is weak. you need effects. you don't have effects here(you know what i mean i hope, all those sounds that hit and go, many times with big delays and reverbs). it's part of trance. you have to get better crash cymbal. more small breaks to let the groove breath. automation on your lead. layer your lead to get big and good one. you can change from time to time the writing of the bassline.
1 more melody and one more lead can improve this track.
after the big break i would use all my groove elements, and play the bassline kbbb, but that's my style. i like your hihats. they are good.
so i got few idea for you what to imrove.
keep pracitcing and search for good sounds!

I agree with chichke. I didn't think the melodies where that cheezy.

As for advice I think chichke covered it all pretty good.

Thank for your opinions and suggestions. I'm about to try some of them now, and will put up a new version eventually.

The melody was intented to be very simplistic and naive, and I suppose "cheesy" might be quite close to that, so I understand what you mean by it, eLliSDee

Chichke: Good suggestions. I'll try to layer the lead with 1 or 2 more sounds to see if it helps to make it fatter and more interesting.
Regarding the call-response thing: Is it the whole idea of call and response that you don't like, or this particular call and response? I do admit it could be a good idea to put some more work into it to make it a bit more interesting and unique.
I think I understand the rest of your suggestion, and will try them out.

The only thing I don't understand is that you write that you think the kick is weak. I've listened to this track on my monitor speakers, my hifi system and my headphones (all of the good quality and with a pretty balanced sound), and it sounds everything but weak to my ears. Is it the volume of the sound or the spectral balance that is amiss, in your opinion? I mean, would you want more low frequency stuff, more "click" or is it something else?

Once again, thx for the opinions, I'll get back with a new version in a while =)

Whoops! I just realised that the version I'd put up on Soundcloud had the EQ turned off on the kickdrum, I think I understand why you thought it sounded weak ;P

good, because my intention is to be honest, not rude.

looking forward to see what you come up with.
Maybe keep this version of the song on soundcloud.. it would be nice to compare. once you've made changes
