Also take into account, if your sending a signal to effects, it will also boost what's not cut in advance; so by cutting, it then only maximizes the bits you need.

Timelock told me once to cut everything below 30hz on master mix.

theoretically if your cutting as you should each of your channels you shouldnt really have anything left to cut on the master channel as low as 20hz.

i think every1 masters its own way... and it depends on the types of sounds u like and use.............

just remember... kick and bass cover low freqs... hats, snares and and synths and all else cover highs or meds... so just play with the freqs u havent used for a better filling

i got this advise here aswell...           I want a spare brain.... or 2.

I usually put a paragraphic eq on the final mix with one of the nodes on 20hz, adjusting the q so everything above about 40hz is unaffected. A HP works fine too, basically does exactly the same thing. Whatever works.

A paragraphic EQ is also handy for emphasizing or cutting out specific frequencies. If you have 2 instruments, in 2 different parts of the midrange, but close enough that the peak frequency of one is interacting with the other's, you can put the paragraphic on em both, set the q for whichever node high, raise the volume, and go through the range to find the specific frequency that overlaps. Then you can do a few things, you can cut out the freqs on the instrument peaking in higher range, cutting out its lower freqs that get in the way, or raise the volume on the other, or slightly raise one and lower another... And so on. The paragraphic can be as precise as you want it. Another option would be to use a band-subtract filter to cut the problem freq range. Once again same sort of thing. Filters can sometimes add unwanted color depending on settings, and DAW.

My rule of thumb with EQ in general is that if it doesn't change the sound, its unnecessary, and, try to EQ out as little as possible of everything, preserve as much dynamics as possible.

you say, you are new... why you care for such a specific issue? do you meant 20Hz - 15 kHz maybe?

nevertheless im most mastering tutorials, the say you should cut everything below 20-30Hz... so leave it until your track is finished. if you really want to play the track on parties, you should consider to master it.

if you want to learn a littlebit EQing, google "Andy Vax mixing secrets", its a FREE viedeo tutorial (700mb as i remember).

cheers

depends the tracks... when you t don have apropriate monitoring for mastering you can t hear what going on so i m sure some cut as a rule... but a high pass filter could do more arm than good, it all depend what need the track.also using a analyzer to judge the low end to see if it need cuting is not reliable in my experience,i have seen some crazy unusual low end curve that sounded great, its always about how it sound in the end.
