Hello I have a question about 'A and R'

should be simple to those who know, I feel like I should know but the definiton has eluded me until now I guess.....
but anyway what does 'A and R' stand for, and what do these people do? It is some position within a label, can someone explain what it is?

Artists & Repertoire.
It's the function in a label that has to do with finding new acts and developing them. |

ok now for a serious answer since it seems spliffnik is looking for one.
so as joeking said a&r is indeed artists and repertoire it is the function in the label which deals with searching and picking out the relevant artists for the label's needs.
Normally this function is in charge of the bookings and live acts for the label's artists and takes care of the general needs of the artists.
in smaller labels (basically ALL trance labels are small in comparison to the rest of the industry) the A&r deals with all the administrative operations including accounting and royalty payments with the artists..
