Hey, I recently started noticing some hearing loss in one of my ears. This surprised me because I always use earplugs when I'm at a club or festival. I read that damage can come from bone conduction. Playing music is what I enjoy, but I worry about my hearing in the long run. My question to you is, how do you protect your ears and reduce the damage caused to them? Thank you |

Go see a physician before you panic. I had hearing loss in my right ear and went to a physician. They removed this disgusting worm-like chunk of earwax/hair that was blocking my canal. Knocking on metal near my ear actually hurt afterwards, but everything sounded so new and fresh |

Hi there!
well this is tricky!
Our hearing degrade with time, we all know that, why i dont know, if has to do with the inner ear hair cell loss or something else..
we live in a world full of sounds and noise!
too loud sounds is not good for our hearing, for example loud music, which we have lots of.
at a psy party you can probably reach up to 110dBSPL
or even more. this will for sure damage your ears, i mean it must beep in everybodys ears after just some hour at a party with very loud volume, also the feeling of numbness..
Rock and pop concerts in general often play too loud.
how you protect your self? wear earplugs, preferably good one´s. Rest from music once in a while, dont use your mp3 player everyday. Try not to wear headphones much at all, Try not to get people to shout at you. About cellular telephone, i dont know but they might harm your ears aswell.
Rest is the best, and if you have "damaged" them much by listening loud for long period of time, put some cotton or cotton wool in them, it feels better and you wont be as much affected by sounds in general...
Now its important that you rest for a couple of days or even more.. one week or two if its very damaged..
Good luck

now regarding the 85dBSPL rule for mixing, well its around 83dBSPL but in general.. i think its a okej volume and dont forget to take rest from mixing and sound creation.. thats why you shouldn´t take drugs, especially THC and Alcohol cause they will make you forget about time and you can fiddle with sounds for too long without even reflecting on that your ears have been "worn out" before it really feels..

I agree with Spycht, go see a physician, then read this:

Depending on your environment it is possible that your are subjected to sounds that you don't like at all: This may be traffic noise, the sound of a machine you work with (I hate the sound of needle printers), or even the voice of another person.
If you are subjected to unwanted sounds for a longer period of time, your listening can become defensive. That means protection mechanisms are at work and shut your ears down.
It is good to have that protection mechanism, but its not good if you don't know about it, since it makes your ears insensitive.
There are not few hifi-systems or speakers that sound 'horrible' to some but are chosen by people with defensive listening. They need a sound that is able to penetrate through their protection mechanism, in order to be enjoyed at all. Unfortunately the problem is not solved by their choice, since this system will fatigue their listening even more and make it more and more defensive.
So what to do?
I suggest that you find out if you have a problem with certain sounds, and if so, eliminate them from your daily life as good as possible.
What's wrong with wanting a silent computer ? Tell the DJ or the mixer of the concert, if you dislike the sound or if its plain too loud. If he don't hear you, use earplugs or just go. Your ears are more important than staying with the mass. Tell your friend to lower his voice if you have a problem with it.
SEEK PLACES OF SILENCE, SO THAT YOU CAN ENJOY LISTENING AGAIN.
If you do this for a while, you will experience how your ears open up.
As you then sit in front of your hifi-system and listen to it, you may become extremely disappointed, since what you thought to be of very high quality is nothing but noise.
But you may also become very happy, if what you thought to be dumb is now plain revealing.
You will however recognize if the sound of your hifi-system is such, that you can listen to it with open ears, or if your ears go into defense mode.

If your ears are being physicially damaged, then this isn't going to help much, but it's totally true when it comes to psychoacoustic theory and has helped me a lot.
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

Yeah - i remember one time i worked alot with sounds and especially bass, after a while i got very annoyed at every bass i listen to, every track i heard was just annoying and it didnt feel good in my ears, i started to get more problems, the pulse in my ear started to annoy me, it felt like it was popping, like a rhytmic pattern, it worried me alot..
also i had pain in my ears.
so i took a very long break from sounds and it feelt soo good...

I was born with one damaged hear, nearly 80% of hearing loss in the higher frequencies.
The only good thing is that I got used to it, obviously, and it didn't prevent me from getting interested in music (I'm being extremely cautious though, and of course I can't make it my job, even if I wanted to). |

A bit offtopic but still worth the mentioning:
How you can observe your brain filtering out unwanted sounds, I discovered it by mere accident:
When you're driving on a highway, going fast with lots of noise by your car, turn up your stereosystem until you think you don't hear the noise anymore or at least it is hardly noticable due to the music playing (louder). Now block one ear from sound (hint: your finger ). The noise magically re-appears! I don't know the exact explanation for this but for some strange stereo-preceiving reason you can mentally block out sounds when using both ears better than when using one ear. Now the downside of this is that you still are hearing the noise and it's still doing all the damage (the addition of loud carmusic + the noise of your car which is surprisingly loud), but you just don't hear it anymore.

I have probs with my ears also. But not regularely till now.I hope it wont develop.Sometimes Im aware of a a tinitus sine wave tone with a low lfo .Im afraid of this and have lots of respect for this.I think being reasonable with making lots of breaks when hearing music is neceseary.
Apart from this you can do a great job in music even if you are deaf.check out the 9th symphony of beethoven this guy was completely deaf at that time he created the melodies harmonies for this etc ..all in his mind. |

you can set watercooling up for a fairly cheap price. if you have a cheap power supply i'd suggest upgrading anyways your voltage rails on your pc need to be stable, you can monitor this with pc software. (just giving you another reason to upgrade I have an enermax. Many psu are very silent and mine has a switch for the fan on it to be low or high. with the water cooling in place your box will be much cooler all around and you can even overclock your machine very safely. fans are still an option as they do make very silent fans. if you get a large silent fan it has to make less rpms to move air therefor it will make less noise. i wish you luck. i have some ear problems related to my sinus (only sometimes). 250hz-500hz when it is loud sometimes causes a buzzing sound as if a piece of wax or something is being vibrated right into my ear drum. also on a pc, you can get a graphics card with no fan. often graphics cards make quite a lot of noise.
harddrives...
if you can afford it switch to a solid state drive. it will be much faster as it does not have a spinning disk in it. since it doesnt spin it also doesnt make noise (kind of like a flash thumb drive) much much much faster!
