one thing i can say about my own album "soundscool" regard loudness and mastering ..
to begin it was one of the most famous mastering artists in australia , simon polinsky. he is doing majority of pop and rock bands in oz. now more and more electronic/trance production goes throu him last 2-3 years.
the first time heard the result i felt like crying.
3-4 tracks only were truely amazing and loud compare to my home play with maximizers etc. but... most of them were sooo loud i could hear evrything fully distorted . (rms --7 was often there.. on paz default setting)
so we asked for second master , with obvious request to make it less loud.
second master is gold.. well , concider what the originl quality was. (rms -11 averege)
now , its easy to fall for loudness = quality , but i think my most played albums throu the years will be ozric tentacles and old goa stuff , i simply like the music , cant give a fuck about its "quality".. real quality is that its perfect , regardless to its rms super-powers or not....
and offcourse as "pro sound engineer" wannabe , i better care i guess
and maybe get this compressor reccomended

real solid advice here .... thanx to all the pros for sharing .... i have personally FELT the difference !!
i however noticed that during the master of my 1 particular track (http://www.beatbiz.net/player.php?tid=1378 if u wanna check it out!) ... during playback at louder level .. there is some distortion occuring .. can somebody advise me on how to eliminate that?? I do not hear on my DAW speakers but only on my internet connected PC monitor speakers.
FYI - the track is 320kbps converted from 44.1khz - 16 bit original!!
What process is best applied?
Thanx again to all y'all!!
B'om Shankara!!
(PS - i'm not using monitors!!)

about the digital cliping, even if its not audiable and adds clarity and punch(never experienced that)or whatever, i can only say that you get that plastic(synthetic) sound on the track,i mean as far as i know digital distorsion doesnt have the harmonic richness as analog distorsion. After all..do we have to make it so louud?!
I mean its ok to mix the track close to zero as you leave little space for quantization noise to occur, but i dont see the point in overpumping the material in mastering stage.well produced track should need almost no mastering, only simple things like tail in, tail out, maybe put the material trough some analog equipment to get the desired warmth...
