What are the headphone basics?? The concepts??

Is there any recommended headphone for beginners?? (plz... cheap and easily found in Brazil)

and... what difference exists between producing in Headphones, Speakers and Monitors?? - sorry for the lameness, but this forum is here for that, isn't it??           "These psychedelic substances cause hysterical psychoses in people who have not taken them..." T.L.

When you produce in headphones you are kind of fooling your ears. Everything sounds good when it's going strait into your ears. But when you listen to it on speakers later it might not be as good as you thought. Low frequencies like the bass-line may be in the wrong pitch, but in phones it sounded correct.

Ofcourse, you can work on the track with phones but when you mix it and do the final touch you should use speakers. That way you can also "feel" the music from it's vibrations, and you get a wider frequency range.

I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 770. They are good, and have a good range. They are pro-phones, but it's better to spend a little more to get quality, i think. You can probably get a used pair fairly cheap. I hope this helps.

Another problem with headphones is that they exaggerate the panning so when you listen to your mix with good speakers, you'll notice the pan is less wide than you "designed" it.

One more thing, it's very easy to hurt your ears with headphones. You might be listening to sounds @ 120 dB without noticing it. Remember, the sound gets right inside your brain and that might be dangerous.

IMO, headphones are good for composing at nights where you can't make loud noises. This way you get an idea of what your track sounds like. But for mastering / real composing / editing, etc, you definitely need good monitor speakers.

And since you're a beginner, you might not know this: you need monitor speakers with a FLAT EQ. Remember this. You want monitors that will tell you exactly what you sound like, because if you have regular PC speakers or home theater speakers, the EQ will already be modified. (these speakers "warm" up the sound to make it sound nicer).

An example of this is Silicon Sound. Their first tracks were made in a studio that had speakers with a rich bass. Then at parties their tracks would sound almost bassless.

There are no perfect monitor speakers. You should try your track in many different sound systems. As a basic rule, your track will lack what your speakers are better at.

One more thing I forgot:

Headphones: very small speakers that you put on your head/ears. only you can listen what comes out of them (unless you put them really loud lol)

Speakers: any kind of sound diffusion device. There are speakers all around you. Check it out!

Monitors: usually mean STUDIO speakers, or DJ speakers. you use them basically to "monitor", i.e: know what's going on.
