I would not recommend dt770's for live use...
If you drive em a bit too much you risk damaging em.
and about the hdj1000s, i wouldnt get these also if you dont want to buy new headphones every year  (or more)

Reference series is just the name of the headphone. Of course, it's just a marketing name, and they certainly market them for studio use, but I've found they have been good phones for DJing, for me. FYI, the 'older model' I mentioned as my first phones were the V6 model.
When you say music is supposed to be played on speakers, I assume you are talking about not mixing & mastering in the cans.
