Have people adopted YouTube as their main "Music-Player"?

Over the last few years many people tend to use YouTube as a reference when they post a track they like or want to share with other people. A fast (somewhat reliable) and easy way to make people aware of what you listen to or like at the moment or to dig up good oldies

But what I find much more interesting is to find out if people have adopted YouTube and similar media as their main "Music-Player" when listening to music? Or if the majority still listen to music via better quality media?

IMO it would be a big step backward and a real shame if people have adopted YouTube as their main "Music-Player" because as an artist I of course want people to experience music in it's absolute best quality.

I know its almost impossible to get a real estimate from this forum alone but it's nonetheless an interesting debate

I can understand when someone wants to watch the official video for a song , but not for listening to electronic music that still does not have a visual component (waiting for that day)

It would be a serious setback for the industry if people adopted this approach for listening to music as a whole. for referencing purpose youtube is really convenient although there are these soundcloud links which i still haven't started using.

I see youtube & soundcloud the most. I'd say no for a main music player because there is no continual play mode. It is replacing mtv for music videos (at least for all the commercial pop crap)

It is sad that sound has actually gotten worse in the digital age (for your average listener) compared to the vinyl and tape reel days. Everyone streams crappy 96kbps internet radio and downloads 128mp3s.           www.soundcloud.com/lunecell

I like the music I really love to listen in top quality. This won't change as long as I live here.
I look youtube for all other things like tutorials etc.Music only to see my songs I like - there are some that produce really visual art..like fsol .
Sometimes I use it also to find sth I have only in mind. That's it.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

yes is a big problem, you spend so much time on making the track sound good and in the end 99% from the people listen the tracks on crappy streamings over the net.
and this guys are making big money out of their websites, i hope atleast in the future the internet become so fast so atleast people can stream wav or flac files in real time           VA - Spiritual Science out now!

YT is great for reference but it's rare to find a perfect-quality track there.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Its just easy to post a youtube clip on forums. Say you are listening to a CD and browse forums, its very easy to do a search on you tube where, chances are, someone has posted a clip of the tune you are currently listening from your CD.

I don't use youtube for music listening sessions, it sounds crap.

Having said that, I do spend time listening to clips of unreleased music from my favourite artists on soundcloud...soundcloud does not sound great at all, but its good enough to get an idea of what their new music sounds like.

I've never encountered an internet radio site that uses 256k or higher and the iTunes Music Store (by far the most popular digital download site for your average person) are encoded as 128kbps AAC files

I listen to it a lot. These days I am more concerned with the quality of the music rather than the production values.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

That is terribly disappointing for me.
you imagine paying for the music would give you better quality than 128kbps
There is no incentive to buy. As one of the most veteran pirates on the seas, i don't even consider stealing bounty under 256

My question was more directed at a "scenario" where people play tunes off YouTube etc. when they want friends to listen to a tune they like instead of putting on a CD/Tape etc. with higher sound quality.

I work as a Teacher in a Public School and rarely see the kids (Age 8 - 12) play CD's or even music from the Computers hard-disk. They play music off YouTube on their laptops or Smart-phones. Even when they have school parties YouTube is the media on Big screens. I asked many of them and very few buy CD's. This is why I think it's going in the wrong direction (Afterall they are the future - not us oldies ). And as mentioned before in this topic even the big shops like iTunes and many other shops does not offer full quality downloads. Hopefully the future will bring higher quality downloads but as things are now it's not at all satisfying seen from an artist point of view. I do not produce music in high quality for fun. I do it because I want people to experience my music the very best way.

Beat the crap out of them, so they know better than to play music off youtube.
