I'm looking to get a lot more serious with my sounds.

Going to pick up a Virus TI (or Polar, can't decide!) and probably some more DSP effects. The investment will start to become significant for something that is just a hobby (although, I have passion!) right now.

What I am curious to know is, if I come up with an album worth of GOOD tracks, what could I realistically except for selling it?

Will it cover the cost of all my equipment at least?

mmm let's see...

cost of a polar on ebay = $2100
album advance for a beginning artist = $900

Ok well let's do that math shall we?

Your net return on investment should be about -1200$

Good luck

music is like wine if u want it to be good and expensive than it takes time to mature... a young wine is cheap and sour a good old wine is tasty in the tong and expensive... so more desirable.           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/

I have made like the 1/10th of the value of my current equipment, and i'm still into investing another 6.000 euros this year. Most probably i'm never going to earn anything significant.

But this is my life. Most people spend their money on good cars and/or women. I'm very happy that i spend mine in something that doesn't lie on the street, doesn't need gas and service all the time and doesn't ask always for more of everything and complain most of the time. And it's always there for me no matter what to use it and abuse it
A friend told me once that the biggest mistake we make is that we believe we live, when in reality we are sleeping in the waiting room of life.

"before you quit your day job" :
im about to cover my studio equipment finnaly
all realeses and sets last 4 years vs. all the equipment i bought (- sold) , yeah i would guess its about to get even..
but thinking about the time , i could probably work and pay 5 studios with normal day job..
anyhow if the wine theory is right and i do believe so .. the time wasnt wasted .. u can call it "sound scool" time           www.sattelbattle.com

it all depends on WHY you make music and what kind of music/trademark you are after.

from "real" underground genuine psy? don't count on $...

nothing. as a newcomere you are just the bitch and many people will just try to **** you while talking about things like karma, shanti and boom. you can be lucky if your releasedate is fixed therefore your day of payment is fixed. and before releasing an album you need to prove success on singles unless you dont want it to be a flop. music business is the most unreliable business i have ever seen.

and besides of that, selling cds or vinyl is simply not modern anymore. everyone just leeches his music from the internet no one is bying cds or vinyls besides of a very small group of honestly fans. this small group mainly support the "stars" of the scene making it even harder for newcomers. the whole concept is build on a failing system (selling music on cd/vinyl) that you need to make money through the internet is a thing many have understood but for sure not the mass of the so called "label-manager" of the trance-scene. make yourself a gift and just dont waste your time with daydreaming people.

if you want to make money to get your costs into return you need to make gigs! yes, livegigs! this is a realy good thing to earn money. its almost out of taxes and you can get in touch with the crowd directly. but on the other side if it gets too professionaly: you will work at night every weekend - finding yourself trying to get your money (which becomes hard if the organizer had not the break even guest-quantity to return his costs) sleeping in jet-leg format and driving/flying many hours though the landscapes only for a relative short time of gig. around your are jumping stupid freaks totally on drugs (if you realy want to dig the psytrance-scene) and you will maybe get drugged yourself to make this realy hard no sleeping job more easier (some gigs are 10 a clock in the morning) or you will find yourself beeing free of all this stuff and feeling that you dont realy fit with this anymore... could be could be not.

so just a point of view. not to mention that you simple just earn the same money with a usual office job far more reliable and far more easier.

if you want to buy your gear for music. you should be sure you do it for the music and your hobby and for yourself and the people you make sometimes lucky with it. forget that money, dont even think about it. if you can make some cash - do it. be sure what it means to try to make a return on investment business from it.

i have always viewed any profits made as going straight into the studio. that's what i care about most... it's what i would spend my money on anyway. if i had any.

due to a number of circumstances i had a long hard struggle with labels and distributors to get money that i was owed... it took three years. and at the end of it all i made enough for a second-hand virus c.

but to be honest i'm absolutely thrilled i would continue to make, release and play music even if there wasn't a single cent to be made... the only time it gets difficult is when you can't cover your costs. a couple of times due to unforseen stuff we have lost money travelling to gigs which didn't happen. that can be very frustrating, because you can spend a lot of money just getting somewhere, expecting to recoup travel expenses etc. and it can really throw you!

I realized a while ago that this scene can barely support itself. So why should I expect it to support me?

If I truly love what I am doing then I should be willing to work and support it rather than the opposite. If I help to support it and help it grow maybe someday it can return that favor.

If not, I'm just happy I could help something that I see as a positive thing grow.

Besides how many great people only ever did one thing? I'm going to school for electrical engineering. Maybe I'll be able to come up with a better solution for renewable energy and design a new synthesizer, whilst making music and performing as well.

Even if I don't make a single dollar, I still plan on making music

It almost sounds like, with this genre, it is better to release your music for free and then let the labels come to you if they are interested.
