I would recommend getting axiom 49..
That was my top choice for years.. But now Im waiting for Akai MPK 49 cause I dont want no compromise.. Its not selling yet here but I got it ordered..
Has everything I would need..
I had Bitstream which is great but I somehow lacked pads..           http://www.facebook.com/xrayzproductions

nice. you won't be disappointed, it's built like a tank. i was lucky enough to snatch one for $250 from some crack-head a few weeks after it came out, when it was sold out in most stores. score!

yes its a tank no doubt.. I played on MPD 24 and it rocks so I know the feel, infact MPK is better cause its like MPC.. Hehe good you managed to grab one.. I will probably miss those 32 knobs on Bitstream but I will love the aftertouch semi-weighted keys on AKAI
I lack aftertouch on my Micron.. Im lucky I reserved one;) It was love at first sight, what can I tell more, u know..           http://www.facebook.com/xrayzproductions

The transient is the first part. If you zoom in a snare audio file, http://www.cs.tut.fi/sgn/arg/intro/basics/snare.jpg you will see the loud bits at the hit of the drum stick and then the resonating decaying tail.
The transient is the loud bit at the start, so you can compress that with a fast attack, relatively high ratio compressor, preferably hard knee, (but try soft knee as well it all depends on the snare sound) and that way you can bring the channel up, yet keep the same peak level, bringing up the perceived level of the tail, thus making the snare sound thicker.
That is a very general explanation and suggestion of what to do on snares. Some times I do the opposite of what I wrote, in order to allow the transient through uncompressed, from a snare sound that I like, yet it was missing some snapyness/transient and I wanted to make it sound more exciting.
So its all about using your ears.

how so?

if anything, MPD is made to look like an MPC. or are you talking about re-trigger and arpeggiator of the MPK? honestly, i don't really understand their usefulness. i prefer to draw things in or to play in real time and then edit.

i have an MPD as well, which i bought right before the MPK (also very cheap). you probably know this, but the pads on the MPK are much smaller than on the MPD. and you have 12 instead of 16. but i still just use the MPK simply due to convenience of having it all in one, so the MPD is just sitting in the corner for now. i'm still keeping it, since i will probably use it to "dj" with Ableton (mouseless set-up, phat conductor style), whenever i get around to messing around with that.

I'm just beginning with this stuff, so I think I'll stay away from compression for now (other than kicks).

I think I've got the placement down, I've been studying songs and looking at 'professional' reason files to get an idea.

I'll try some light modulation to the hats.
