i've never compressed claps, but some samples that I use now sound compressed, but it gives them punch.
I think it would help if someone had some steps to make drum samples sound punchy.
compression is definitely a start.
infected mushroom drums for example sound like they are punching out of the speakers... the song becoming insane for example

| maybe a warmer like psp vintage and some craftfully placed reverb and perhaps some phasing to get movement going ? or maybe doubling the sound up ?
careful compression might really pronounce the transient and then some reverb? not having heard the tune I can't be sure though but i would try this stuff to get that effect

Will anybody jump to the defence of Sonic Charge Micro Tonic if I say I don't like it?
Can anybody give me an example of anything good made in it?
I found it overly fiddly without any real benefit. |

Star by putting your main open hat on every off beat. Then play around with some closed hats to get some nice groove on the top end. There are 4 beats in each bar and there are 4 16th notes between each beat. So put your open hat on the 3rd quarter note and try a closed hat on the 2nd quarter note. That's the basic pattern. Write some part down to get the feel of things. Then go wild.

X-rayz -
The result is what counts. Whether Propellerheads helped develop it is irrelevant, and in my book, wouldn't automatically make something awesome!
Also, being 'sure' you can make something useful without producing any evidence is equally irrelevant!
I'm willing to change my opinion if convinced, but at the moment I'll stick to my 1st hand conclusion -while fun, it just doesn't seem capable of great results I could use every day.
becktrank - there are many types of hi hats!! You'll get different a different answer for everyone probably.
My example: Put the shortest 'tappiest' hat on every 16th, replace at random with longer more squirty type hats.
And an open hat off beat between every kick.
A fairly standard starting point. |

Not just hats! I just wanted to see what can be done.
The demo track was pretty uninspiring on the website, I realise its a synth - but its TOO synthetic. I think I would probably make one track with purely synthetic noises and then get bored!

I got ur point, just didnt understand that part....
@Tomos Yeah i want i starting point, thank you, i will try to put this in practice.
Althought i m just starting studying music theory, i always had a good notion of percusion, really like it, but sometimes is really hard to put what is in my mind to the sequencer (talking not only about hats but percusion and drums in general), also i dont have midi keyboard yet, but i am not sure its done with the keyboard. Is there any advice or software, or hardware, or whatelse, that could make this transition (mind to sequencer) easier? Everytime the percusion that i set up goes totaly differente than the one that was on my head or that I was playing with my fingers in a table i.e
i dont know if i m sounding crazy, but hope someone could understand the anxiety that i feel

Drop some breakbeats in the arrangement. Loop a bar (4 beats) and zoom into the audio region. Identify the different drum hits in the transients and play.
Listen before you look, cause getting the feel is more important than mechanicaly looking at the transients.
Feeling the beat will help a lot when you wanna make your own breakbeats and there's nothing to look at but an empty midi editor.

k - kick
s - snare
c - closed hi-hat
o - open hi-hat
k----k----
-----s----
CcCcCcCc
--o-----o--
start with that. then start messing about moving hits around, deleting them, etc. a very important thing is to play with different velocities so it doesn't sound robotic (unless that's what you want). that's what i mean by CcCc... C = 120, c = 100 for example (those are values for velocities... completely picked at random). |

@pipe&slippers thank you for the advice, this will be helpful.
@septa nice bro, thanks, now i have a good starting point to mess around. Did you want to mean any difference between C and c or is the same ?
@x-rayz yeah, me too, i will get an axiom25 for me. I think the 8 drum pads can be VERY useful.
