basically any song off this page has these 16th hihats that are just perfect sounding to me. My hats sound dull. I've tried phasers, reverbs, not so much stereo enhancers, panning, eqs, and gating.
The way the hats sound on the song - Intelligent System, for example just sound great.
The high - freqs are there, and they're not too much.
Also, what is the placement of them in the bar?
in 16ths
isn't it just kick.closedh.closedh.openhat.
kick&closedh.closedh.closedhat.openhat. ?
could anyone emulate these kind of sounding hihats? like the way they are placed? I know it's a lot to ask for.

it sounds like 16th to me. But it might be a delayed hat on 8th for example with some filter. What usually helps is to pan the 16ths hats (closed and short) to the left and right. So first left second right third left etc etc. This gives it a bit more swing. Or you could sidechain them to the kick to get some groove going. Also make sure they are not too loud. They usually sound best if they are subtle. |

freakulizer.. intelligent system...
the percussion is very proeminent in this song..
but it's well leveled! doesn't make the ears bleed!
To me, it sounds above and slightly at front of all the other track elements....
The hats are combined with that "clappy snare".
Very well chosen samples!! They are not that harsh metallic stuff. they're pretty smooth.
Try using two layers...
16 hats 16th long + 8 or 16 hats with 32th notes.
HHHH|HHHH|HHHH|HHHH|
h_h_|h_h_|h_h_|h_h_|
___r|____|___r|____|
use reverse hats before some hats, different velocities..
here some examples:

The old adage "you can't polish a turd" comes to mind.
In my experience, you should aim for it to sound acceptable even before any processing - or else its probably not the right sample to use.
Other than that, I reckon carefully used delays are the most powerful fx to put on hihats - it will act as a bit of reverb too. Actual reverb can be nice, but also easily make it undefined and muddy. Flangers (again careful use) can add cool sparkle too.
Another tip is to find the specific frequency where you want them to cut through the mix and do a slight eq boost there with a relatively high q, then shave off the frequencies that don't matter. |

for my hihats i like to use dry 909 samples,in sample cd it s not processed according to your other beats sounds and that make a big difference to me, its like equing /processing a bassline in solo and then hope it ll fit in your track with luck.for processing personally i dont use much, if the 909 is well sampled it sound already very good, just envelop and tuning in a sampler, eq ,light compression and saturation then mono > stereo (here there is many way to experiment, you can do it with some fx,doubling and track delay, or using 2 different samples and midi pattern panned left and right to give a wide feeling, many many way ..) for placement sometimes i use a different sample to play at the same time of the kick , for the groove it come from the velocity, i hope it give you some ideas, the most important to me is the midi pattern and the sample tuning/envelop to make good hihats |

Group send your hihat channels to an Izotope Ozone instance and use the band widening stuff inside it to give it stereo space... you can also use the exciter to shape the sound (use very light settings or will hurt).

yes with digital saturation i have find it s very easy to ruin the sound when pushed a bit too much ,for hihats it can be painfull |

You can put your hi-hat anywhere you want. Just mess around until you find something that feels comfortable for you.
usually i put it higher. You can get more volume from your snare in and hats when they are like that. add a lil bit of delay and it will make it sound like the track has more groove to it.... but also make sure you add variation to it or else the track will sound to monotonous!!
i shall be uploadin a pic soon on the placement.... just give me a bit...
cheers!!

Sidechain it to the kick, and swing is hidden under the 'setup' button in your quantise menu. Add what % you want to what setup you want (1/16 1/32 etc) and store it.
And you're done

cool. how many closed hat samples do you guys use? I know there is no set number per song. But I usually just use 1 or 2.
The swinging hats is something I actually don't do much so I'll try that again.
Sidechaining hats I've never done. So I'll try that too.
