Hello, I open this forum because I want to know how many of the djs in this forum practice harmonic mixing. In Mexico very few DJs mix harmonicly, in fact many cant tell the difference. I wonder if this happens so much in other countries also. I would appreciate any comments. Thanx!!

Well, i call harmonic mixing = good mixing, otherwise the not harminc i call it BAD mixing.
Maybe many cant tell the difference, there are not educated to notice it.. as some of us do. The true as we all now is that few dj's are REALY, but realy good. A simple mix in a cdj, everyone in a few hours of practice can make it... a good mix (harmonical mix, as you call it) is just matter of talent. Thats the difference between a dj and a good dj
would be good to know what are the caracteristics of the meaning "harmonical mix"

Dude what is this nonsense
unhormonic mixing really sucks
here in India everyone mixes, its the norm. if you dont mix dont play
few who play on Dats too keep it real clean. Since music wit power only get to a tumultous end
if your not mixing and collecting mp3 s. Its probably time for and upgrade |

harmonic mixing is cool but at teh same time i like the contrast of a key change, especially when it drops a few notches deeper

many dj's dont even know what harmonic means... because its a musical term and many DJ's dont have much musical training or experience (other that 4x4 music) for example one of the replies to this thread obviously showed that the person thought harmonic mixing was the same as just... well, mixing. I think evilD thought harmonic mixing meant beat-matching because he started talking about DATS etc...
others may know what harmonic and non harmonic means, but not know how to hear the difference... as dj, the way I deal with this issue.... when listening to the mix I plan to do in the headphones, if it sounds like it somehow fits harmonically, I will do it. It might not technially be a harmonic combination, but there are many minor tones or scales that can result on a non-harmonic mix that end up sounding great.
So I judge the harmony or non-harmony of a mix by my instictive feeling of how it sounds, if its off, its off, if its on, its on. I've gone through some really wierd and eerie but great mixes that only turned out that way because there was a mis match in harmony which produced a wierd minor tone. |

it's not always about harmony - even if 2 track are fitting harmonically it dont mean that they mix well together.... it's not that black & white. There are many other ways of mixing even non-harmonic tracks together so it sound good.

As u can see many dont even know what this term and technique means, and certainly many cant tell the difference. Harmonic mixing is not about beatmatching, is about having two tracks even in diferent notes or keys, and mixing them in harmony...ehm... this isn't something that a Musician invented, this follows the laws of the universe!! The universe is also written in semitones, scales, and chords , its the beauty and art of how u can put everything together..... Two tracks dont have to be on the same note/tone to be harmonc, as Jehan said u can listen in the headphones if its harmonic or if its not...
I know some artists / djs may like DISSONANCE and unharmonic changes in the music, maybe its just another style. Mathematicaly speaking harmony is how the sound waves can fit into each other perfectly , not at the exact same frequency necesarly but in harmonic ,notes and chords.... i really dont know so much about music language but i really go in favor of harmony!! dissonance really freaks me out when im dancing, it makes me stop dancing... but this is the reaction it produces on me, im aware that some people may even like it

in canada... (well Toronto at least)...
PSY djs here dont really mix... except for VERY FEW!!, most of them... cut from track to track without any beatmatching... or mixing what so ever..., or fade.. or ... lately ive been hearing alot of AUTOMIX ... 5 second mixes on the new cdj1000s that some clubs got haha..its horrible.....! Automix baby..all the way lol.... maybe someone ill videotape that and post it ..just for the laugh lol! however some psy djs in t.o. do mix.. but the majority doesnt....
there is alot of way to mix tracks nicely without beatmatching...but still... they dont even do that haha!
but i must give some respect to the ones who do mix.... not gonna mention names tho lol!
but most people are pussies to admit it.... |

GuyShanti - it doesn't necessarily have to be in the same key, but one of the keys that is in the same harmony as the original key. There are twelve keys all up (well, actually 24 if you count major and minor, but there are very few psytrance tracks in a major key), and each one of those keys mixes smoothly with another two keys.. (and one major key if the original is in minor, and vice versa). Check out this link: http://www.harmonic-mixing.com/charts/keychart.mv for a list of what key mixes nicely with other keys..
Personally, while I'd like to mix harmoniously, and I feel I do quite often sometimes subconsciously, it's hard to keep working out what key each of my tracks are in. I get so much new music so often that to key each track would take time I simply don't have. Also I much prefer not to use the master tempo, as I feel it introduces artifacts (ie, cuts in sound) that are unacceptable on a large system, so that alone screws up any attempts at proper harmonious mixing.
I think the best thing for a DJ to do is to listen carefully to the tracks they're bringing in, and listen for any obvious key clash. Often when I'm picking out tracks I'll have the current one in my head and each time I look through my case I can almost hear the melodies from each of them, so I can guess pretty accurately whether the key will be close.
If anyone out there does key their music a lot, I'd be interested if we could get some sort of global database going of keyed psytrance tracks.. PM me! |

Actually there are only 12 keys using the standard natural scale, not 24 even if you include major and minor because any major scales also includes the notes of a minor scale up one 6th (for example: C major C D E F G A B C, is exactly the same as A minor A B C D E F G A, you just use A as the root note instead of C). A full discussion of this would involve lots of theory on modes which would put most people to sleep so I won't get into it here. Anyways we recently had a fairly interesting dicussion on harmonic mixing over in the equipment and music creation forum here..

Which Toronto Dj's don't mix? All the dj's I've ever booked are awesome, please let me know.
Perhaps you should be more constructive and a little less destructive.
