Try Waves' Doubler, it's not exactly a harmonizer, but you can add additional layers of a sound with it that are detuned and moved in stereo space. Nice !

aah., ., i get it ., well, the harmonizer is a product, not an effect category ., produced by eventide.,

i think antares has some plugs that can help you.,
you need to look in the direction of good pitch shifting plugins.,

personaly i dont like the sound of most plugin pitch shiftiers.,
but it's worth a try.,

there are hardware units that can do this very very nicely (like the harmonizer ) .,., but they are quite expensive.,

i dont think that any form of distortion can help here.,
it does add harmonics but it does not create the harmonic series for the octaved sound (the one you want to add), just for the original., so you will not get the effect of something playing one octave higher.,

if you have a multi input/output soundcard and a guitar pedal, you could loop it..

a proper harmonizer? like eventide? no. not for VST. i think eventide is releasing for protools. but there is the waves ultravoice, and the akai decabuddy. these are decent. but nothing really fantastic. hamonizers is one area where hardware is maintaining a healthy lead over software. for some dumb reason.
