with ableton live you could match both the tempo and keys of a song individually and realtime. You will still have to identify the original key yourself, but then its just a question of , hey its in a gminor? and my last song was an fminor, so transpose it -2 without changing the tempo, then adjust the tempo to that of the last song. then crossfade. easy peasy japanesey |

Definitely. live makes life way too easy.
Or it just made all the super skills of pro dj's obsolete. |

As far as i know, there are many Dj's u can call professional mix with sofware (specially Ableton Live). Sasha , Tong and many others do ( not that i like that music, but they are ceirtanly professional).
Besides whats so cool about beatmatching. Its monotonous and not creative at all. If the CPU can do it and u can concentrate on more creative and artistic aspects of mixing, i think its most welcome. Many people are making software a part of their dj setup, besides decks and turntables. If u have a good souncard u can have a better audio resolution than decks and a dedicated control surface so u dont use the mouse, then it rocks..

nevermind
i just think mixing with pc is lame!
Any kid with a laptop can do it..
Mixing with software is like producing with Sony Ericsson Music dj.. (the ringtone composer)

Dennis i hope you hear how dumb your statement is
There are dudes with midi controllers and laptops with Traktor Dj that can make wicked mixes...

A good thing to do is to play the track find out what Key its playing in and attach the Key to the filename. Or make a Folder with Diffrent Keys and sort them that way. Makes it really easy to browse while mixing and find things in right keys.

im just beeing narrowminded! imho old is gold!
ive never crashed a cdj ever, i just dont trust computers. And its way to simple to use software, when im playing i want to do stuff myself and not let some kind of lame software handle for me..
IMHO Its just as fake as liveacts that press play and then pretend to twist some knobs on a midikeyboard that aint even connected.
And this happends way to often!
but use whatever you want.. this is just my opinion. |

what i'm more sick of is DJs that sit up there and think they're god and take credit for all the crowd response of a killer track when they're just matching a few beats...
especially DJ's that spin copies, which I see alot of these days....
Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!

atleast the crowd knows its a dj set and not playback =) So whats the point with dj's if not to play music? And whats the point with a live act when its just as live as hitting a spacebar? (not saying all liveacts are like that but there is alot)
And about copies, lots of ppl that play and travel with their music make copies just in case they should loose their music in some way..
Its just an insurance to keep their collection safe.
and if you think matching few beats is all a dj is doing you should try building a set on that statement, please record it and post the link for it here. I would love to review that one!
and btw, god is a dj
So back to the topic, harmonic mixing is quite easy, just use your ear. If it sounds good its probably good and if not then try with another track that you know good and that would fit into the "story" of the set.
No need for cheap ass software! it takes away all the fun. and cdj's dont come with bluescreen and allmost never any system errors unless the lasers are in bad condition |

this is ridiculous ..... if mixing is for you all about matchin beat then thats your problem cause as far as i'm concern the only thing the software is gonna do for you is this.
now if you mix thinking of adding vst doing some production on top like adding drum fx vocoding .... isn't more creative ? aren't you responsible for part of the sound going into the loud speaker.
ive always djed using fx even drum machine when live was out the whole thing changed for me. and i won;t go back to using cds on their own cause to me its boring. but i understand those who still like it as long as they don;t feel the need to split shit over progress.
in 10 years will see what will be the standart your laptop wiht some controllers or your cdj 100 ????
