yeah, totaly agree.,
soundcard and especially monitors are your 'window' through which you 'see' the music.
if they are lo quality you cannot 'see' what you are doing! the window is dirty!

i think monitors are a bit of a personal thing.,
i worked on different ones and they all had a character and i needed to get used to them.,
also, the space they are used in realy changes how they sound., placement is almost just as important as the quality of the monitors (even more important, actually).,
the best thing to do (if possible) is try some monitors from a shop.,
first decide on a price.,
then rent/borrow a pair that is under, on and above your budget.,
try them all in different positions in your studio.,
try different types of music on them.,
that's the only way to know if they are good for your situation and wether you are looking in the right price segment.,
also, sometimes cheap monitors can have a surprisingly good sound in certain situations.,
if you cant do this or you cant listen to some monitors in a shop (this is already much worse than hearing them in your studio because of acoustics) then you have to guess.,
you will not know if they are any good for you if you didnt try them in your studio.,
reviews and opinions only help a little bit.,
btw., i havent worked on alesis or samsons so i cant comment.,
also, both alesis and samson have a wide range of different sounding monitors .,.,
about soundcards.
if you are on a budget then at the moment the best thing is the e-mu range i think.
very nice qualiy for a very low price.,
beats m-audio by a mile
in any case, these days any card in the $200~$500 range gives good enough results to make serious music.,
what is more important is software (driver) stability and stuff like that (i dont know what computer u use.)
greets.,

PsyGhoDeli,
to try out that's dificult...but if you know what you wanna buy..try the internet..sometimes it's cheaper that in local stores! (at least here..)
btw.. i've a pair of samsons my first monitors Resolv 50a, i'm happy with them...everything sound ok, altough the elite guys say a 5'' woofer is not the best solution regarding bass creation/optimisation sounds...altough i'm happy with them..cos i've learn how they sound in my lab..and how things gonna sound outside of it but if you have a space problem..then this monitores are excelent... small..and with a very good response in all the freq range...
btw ZilDoggo, i'm researching for a 'my needs' sound card... and i was kind of divided by the M-Audio Delta 44 or the E-MU 1212M ... my budget it's extremly low... kind of 250 €... so can i go forward to the E-MU ?
thanks in advanced guys...

yeah, emu is at least as good as m-audio and it's cheaper.
(omfg, the first thing in years from creative actually worth buying. )
it also has built in effects but they are shut off in 96 or 192khz mode so you have been warned.,
midi port implementation seems to be solid., no problems with my nord modular (which is VERY picky).
so if you dont need the 2 extra in and outs on the m-audio then i think emu is your choise.,

i wouldnt hurry to buy a monitors coz i found very satesfieng and relayble alternative - my stereo speakers (2 blasters realy!) so for a start i think you find one thing to save some pressuse money.
u defently need to work on good soundcard so take a week to do some research (don't pass this it is very important stage - find the right soundcard qualities for your needs), and buy your self one.
of course you need fast prossecor so keep this in mind.
try start off with this and i think it will be smarter to buy more stuff later after you'll get to know your capebilities.
