...I just saw some photos & equipment lists of some trance musicians (isratrance.com of course!) and it seems that they all use hardware...even the young ones! They are musicians/DJs-all of them. It's like if I plan to become a trance musician I should also learn DJing...Maybe it's because they make most of their money of touring??? |

What about a keyboard?
If i have a strong strong computer (dual athlon) and a keyboard (piano) and good sound card and monitor, is that good enough? |

Well we could also look at the other side
for rich? yes hardware is expensive, but don't have to be rich to buy stuff, it just takes longer.
for famous artists? if only that was true, so if I buy a virus im a famous artist?
For people who don't know who to use a pc? so what does a synth run on? software which runs on?
for freaks? well that is a matter of opinion if u like to mess around with the mouse all day long then congrats, i find it very annoying some times.
Ahmed, yes u can do load with only a pc and software, but u will need a sound card (due to latency), a midi keyboard, and probably some monitors. but u will soon see that u need to get ur hands on something 'real' soon

u forgot one group of people. the ones that love faders n knobs anyway i dont think that hard or software is good for particular groups of people. just decide yourself what to use.
i dont use any hardies yet (excluding the ones in my pc ) but i sure want to try some of them out. cant think about vst-plugs being a better feeling to work with than hardsynths... Anakoluth A Pebble in Your Eardrum's Shoe since 2001!

yeah the reason lots of people have hardware is partly because they have a 'lust' for the hardware synths, and partly because it is only recently that the software has begun to catch up in quality.
Heck - the Access Virus VST plugin has just been announced... (ok for powercore but still) - so by this stage the only advantage to hardware is the unbeatable hands-on
interface. But this is a serious point.... the interface does make them more 'inspiring' to work with.
Like I say - a few years ago there were no software synths that came close.
I totally recommend getting a simple MIDI controller keyboard.... I use mine every day and it is really helpful for jotting down melodic ideas and even just triggering samples to test things out. I find writing melodies almost impossible with the mouse alone!!

I would agree that it really depends on the person. I have no real hardware due to financial constraints but I do know that software can do a lot of things that hardware can. It really just depends on your creative style. I personally mouse my way through every song that I make... For one, I can't play piano to save my life. I just recently figured out why writing music in key is important. (Sometimes 7 years of classical music training doesn't sink in till almost 10 years later) The reason why I bought the midi controller keyboard was for the knobs and the slider, which to be honest I haven't used to it's fullest potential. (Hyper Draw in Logic was my first introduction to automation)
So do you need hardware, not really, but if you want some, I'd get some.... When I can afford to, I will purchase something

well, you can do pwerful things with only a pc/mac. But i'd say software(only) is for beginners, experimenting their first tracks (fruity loops etc). But if you want more subtle in the music i think at least one hardware synth is necessary. The ability to play a melody on your own is important to get your own touch on a track.
A VA-synt like Nord Lead (sounds good straight out of the box) and Virus (sounds good with its internal fx) is versatile. I haven't played any VSTi that sound as good as an Virus, Nord Lead (or even a Korg Prophecy when it comes to creative, mangling sounds.
And the mouse isn't always that fun to do everything with. |
