there are presently very many good vst `s that sounds really good, but what is your opinion? do you spend most vst or hardware on your tracks? and how big is the difference between the sound, nowadays

A good balance of both in my case, hardware (analog) and software, complement each other.
There is stuff that analog does better than software and stuff software does better than analog.
Having said that I tend to use analog hardware more and more but that is because of the sounds I am looking for in my music, which I find in analog synths.

Peace out.

Differences won't make one better than the other, is just different flavor... you can do ok without hardware but it opens your eyes / ears and i find it very very fun to work with boxes.

hardware give me more satisfaction and that what matter to me..enjoying .
in the other hand vst are great for workflow and lot of things not possible with hardware .. so not really one vs the other but using both at what they are good at.

Watch out that most hardware is digital nowadays, so as a matter of sound, there's really no difference since you're basicly getting a VST with a box arround it (unless your hardware is true analog).

VSTs got pretty good recently with Massive, Sylenth, Omnisphere and others.

BUT, I think having the knobs in front if you is another level of workflow. I WOULD LOVE to have Massive as an hardware equipment.
I think the knobs are the real advantage of hardware synths (analog or digital), not the sound.

TL/DR: If you have money, go for it! If you don't, it's not necessary

I second that. Having knobs to work with (preferably as much direct control as possible rather than having to navigate through endless submenus) really enables me to interact with the music creatively in a different way altogether. Right now I don't have access to any of my synths because of logistical reasons, and oh I miss 'em. Can't wait to set up a new studio place - I'm definitely going to invest more in hardware ... GAS!

I agree with both of you!
I definitely have GAS also!
I use 90% hardware and the other 10% is 1-2 vsti's and some filters/fx.
Creativity and workflow is the main difference with hardware, i get frustrated with turning knobs with a mouse and love turning them on hardware boxes and i actually fine tune much more with external gear!

For those of you with hardware synths etc post what you have id love to see what u guys are using.

agree with all you re saying but there is loads of new intresting things hapening in analog ! most hardware i m intrested in is analog and sell new .
imo most of the intresting new hardware is far to be mostly digital ,more the opposiste..
since the G1 nord 2 some waldorf and virus synth there is not much great synth in digital..the old ones are still praised as the best ones 10/15 year later (except maybe for the virus even if TI is supposed to not sound as good as the a/b/c)

Hardware:
Pro:
*Hands on, dedicated knobs, depends highly on the synth, the microQ is anything else than fun (no mouse, no bright TFT)
*unique character of sound without much work (on some synths)

Con:
*Naming new Presets might be boring but teaches you patience:)
*No Total Recall (that why I sample anything)

Software:
Pro:
*Total Recall
*More posibilities than some Hardware synths

Con:
*Boring to tweak compared to a Hardware synth (e.G my JD800
*many soft synths tend to sound similar/clean/boriung without special character/soul
some work is needed to make them sound unique

I love Diva...but I can't really get good bass out of it.

I absolutely love the self oscillating filter, its the best self osc filter I've ever heard in software by far, so the FX that are possible with diva sound AMAZING....

but...I find its modulation kind of limiting, and some of the interface just...doesn't click with me. I'm rather fond at this point of using Ableton's Max4Live LFO devices to modulate its parameters instead of the stock LFOs in it.

IDK, i probably just need to spend more time with it, but I was all excited to use it for some analog style bass but...it sounds kind of flabby to me for psybass            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

with osc phase retriger (sad it s not implemented )it would be one of the best softsynth for psy bassline to me. maybe we have different taste
like that it s possible to make amazing goa bassline as it don t really need retriger.
