Hello all.
I am thinking of buying a secondary synth for my production and liveact. Currently the Virus TI keyboard is my main synth. I was thinking of something along the Nord line such as the Modular (which I recently found out was discontinued ) but I don't know enough to make a good decision on a Clavia.
I would prefer my new synth to be smaller (less than 61 keys large) and support USB connectivity. Preferably with some form of digital interface in addition to the usual hardware knob/button goodies as I have grown used to my Virus and would like to carry over what I've learned from using that more easily. It would also be nice if the synth were known for producing a good type of sound such as fat bass, really trippy FX/Pads or crunchy distorted leads (or whatever), so I can dedicate more of what I already have to making other sounds and spread my range out a bit. I'd like to spend roughly 1000-1500 euros.
Anyone have any suggestions? What would you go for and why?

Hey man , ill tell you what i would go for , and it would definetly be the Roland V-synth Gt , he possibilities are endless on this , it has a very flexible interface to program sounds and also its sampling features are awesome , its got usb interface and its good for producing any type of sound you want, its got a touch screen GUI to top all that with the the d beam and more , making tweaking on the fly very realistic and versatile , Nord Modular G2 is also another one to consider with solid modular functions and having the virus ti , these other synths are no less. They just have a different sound or tone.
Virus Ti - M.I.P.A Synthesizer of the year
Roland V-synth Xt -" " " "
and a few others i would consider are
Alesis Ion
korg ms2000
Novation Nova
waldorf MicroQ / MicrowaveXt
Nordwave - M.I.P.A synthesizer of the year 2009 or 2008?
Nordlead2 /Nord rack2
You really cant go wrong with any of these believe me..

Sweet, thanks for the tips! I'll look at those. I considered buying an Ion some time ago when they first came out but never did, even though I wanted to. Also someone else mentioned the Nord Rack and Modular to me the very moment I was reading those so I'll look at them also

i have a ti snow and im waiting for my g2 i thyinkg is the best combo ever made aiajaijaijaijaaa
i also advice the evolver a friend have it and its massiveee i would get it for sure in a futureeeeeeeee its sounds is uniqueeee and have 2 digital osc and 2 analog so is a good complement for the ti that is pure digital
also a good option may be a waldorf q or blofeld wavetable sintesis look pretty nice
i just test the waldorfxt and sounds good so his bigger brother must sound even better for sure
1000-1500 euros and Clavia - this can be Nord Lead 3. Even cheaper. Some like NL3, some don't. To me it's a great option because of its stable working (friend of mine told he expirienced problems with it, so we think some of these devices were made better than the others). It would be good if you have an opportunity to try it in work first to see if it works stable with your set up.
And what for the sound, it sounds less analogue, but very cool. 4 part multitembral is more than enough to make interesting sounds, and no problem (what is very important!) with dumping sysex files via the clavia's native editor. Knobs working without an emphasis is a too pro for the convenient working.

I just pickedup the V-synth Xt , however can someone comment on its power supply? cuz on the back it only says 100V ,16watts but on roland website it says its a multivoltage unit which spans all the way to 240v?

I had a moog little phatty for a while, while what it does is really great, it does very little.
I really liked moving the filter really really....sloooow and just listen to the little bubbly analog fizzle going on. For me, it wasn't worth the amount of money I spent on it so I sold it and invested in other gear.
I think you made a good choice, the Roland will open up a lot of possibilities that you don't have with other synths and I think thats a good way to expand your arsenal, to fill in places you don't have yet; no need to overlap.

the v-synth does indeed open new avenues for sound manipulation , i just installed a memory adapter and now i have basically unlimited storage for samples.
I just bought a Elektron Machinedrum UW version , a very good peice of gear this one , will be used alot here , very handy for doing random glitchy sounds much like the plugin Buffer Override except that you can control each and every parameter of the sound , endless possibilities not only for drum sounds but any other sound u wanna fuckup... On the downside the Mk1 has only 2MB of sample memory to load but when considering 1 shot samples , even that is quite a bit. A very well recommended peice of gear and its the only piece i can actually think of gigging with!!

great synth's mention'd already, most classics i would say, would really like to have the old Clavia micro modular and then hook it to a "big" midi controller. But what about one's like the Alesis Micron, Dave smith Mopho, MFB Kraftzwerg, Korg radias, MFB synth2. I know they dont have grafic interface like Roland fantom but just something else then the "usual's".

i can definetly vouch for the micromodular , for many times the sounds it makes simply amazes, now i havent found a solid midi controller for this , i would think of a doepfer drehbank which has 64 rotary knobs an excellent choice unfortunately they are not sold anymore. Any other recommendations?
For the Alesis Micron is the smaller brother of ION which is a thunderous synth , it doesnt look too appealing , the knobs look cheap etc nontheless a good synthie for the VA collection.
There is another thread of 1st hand users of the DSI Mopho , nice little analog box , heard it makes powerfull basslines , cant comment further
Never herd MFB stuff but this kraftzwerg looks sweet and the fact it is a semi modular makes me interested , reviews state it goes well with the Doepfer A100 , a good choice for Modular fans i would think , but atleast for me anything that says Semi Modular in its specs, screams Alesis Andromeda , one of the last Analog Polysynths with semi modular architecture , its a pretty expensive synthesizer but 1 i wish to have in my lifetime
Korg Radias seems like a nice option , built from the Oasys engine , also used by R3, the R3 can be compared to the Korg ms2000 , however ive heard that ms2000 simply sounds fatter and dirty(which i like) then the R3 which is alot cleaner sound .The Radias i would think is a modern va ,the specs state alot of options looking like a competitor for the Virus range maybe? Korg vocoders are hard to beat , the price at what its going is defintely a solid deal ... Radias will be much the va synth of choice for the Korg Fansboys
Cant comment on MFB synth2 .
Amongst the cheaper options i think Ms2000, Waldorf Microwave Xt or the Micro Q are good , dont count out waldorf stuff , they are huge sounding synths very good fm sounds ..
A video of a Ob Matrix 6 controlled by the Drehbank !!
come to think of it that Oberheim 6r does sound nice
