Hi folks,

To those who have good Hardware synths, (Virus, Korg, whatever) how would you compare the overall quality of the bass sound VS. a software synth ?

Would you say it is impossible to have as much a gound sound with a software than with a hardware? or with the correct settings a software can be as good as a real synth?

Do you have any samples or examples of your hardware generated bass sounds?

I'm pretty satisfied with my current bass sound. I simply use VB-1, some EQ, some compression, sidechain, and it sounds all good to me.

But I admit it doesn't sound as good as the elite artists I listen to. I'd like to improve and perhaps buy a good synth!

Thanks for your help guys !

I had a virus and I still used software vst for bass. I just used the virus occasionally for lead sounds when i was bored with software. I sold it if that tells you anything. keep in mind a virus is not analog though.

I use Virus Snow for my bass nowadays just out of personal preference. In my album, my basses consisted of Virus, Alien303, Twin2.

you can make good ones from both, it s very subjective it depends what sound you enjoy ,what a good bass is for you...
but you can t go wrong with analog like in trilian , it s a bit the best of both worlds .
fo my taste analog oscillators are still the best as source but i like plugins like esm too, in the past i used pentagon too, it was good ,both of these plugs can give you decent result in my experience

maybe post a youtube link of a bassline you enjoy cause if it s fat analog like esm or some analog oscillators like in trilian there is no way you will get that sound in vb1 wihtout lot of work

software bass synths have allowed my to change note patterns and write new riffs in sections where, using my old analog modular synths, would be impossible, since even if I replicate the patch exactly as it was in the photo (I used to take pictures of my old modular patches, my own way of "memory"), it would never sound exactly the same.

As far as hardware with patch memory, the Virus B never came close to the Nord Lead, which was pretty good. Other than them the A6 was pretty "meh" sounding, the SuperNova was quite alright, great for prog bass, the MS 2000 was qute alright as well (needed lots of EQing though), the juno 60, was nice, the Evolver was "ok", the Waldorf Pulse was really nice and the sh-101 was the bomb.

Anyhow, I always use software nowdays.

I think most artists use software for bass, you can get very proffesional results, dont need hardware.

I usually use cronox 2 or trillian.           http://soundcloud.com/djtuk

I ordered new hardware for basslines yesterday, should get it in a few days. It will probably be useless for psytrance, but for genres which don't requite sample accurate precision on the bass, it could do wonders!

good idea, for example this fat bassline:

is there a way to get that with software??

I have a good basic understanding of how to build a good bassline, but I want to learn more complex techniques and concepts, if anyone is willing to help me.

The 'mother of all bassline' thread is a MESS. there's only newbies begging for a bassline generator...

And you are assuming that it's hardware?
I've made countless basslines that sound like this with software.
Envelopes and filters is the key.

can t listen right now but i remmeber that track ,forget vb1 for everyhting in that style imo , many use esm ,exs24 ,trilian, sylenth, massive, cronox 2... you need some kind of creamy analog sounding oscillators . easiest one to tweak and process in the one i used are trilian, sylenth and cronox 2 , one that you can really like cause it have been overused it have a signature sound and imo is one of the best psytrance bassline synth is esm but it s a bit more tricky to use.. try cronox 2 or sylenth imo easy to tweak and get decent sound
