What for?
Get a laptop with a software sequencer. Unless you can enlighten me on the benefits of a dedicated hardware sequencer.

Tighter timing, no crashes, no latency issues ...

Hi
I used to use them years ago but....they are very limited. About latency well sorry but u will still get it my friend that’s the nature of midi. So it will be better to compensate the latency in your laptop. It is very nice to use hardware sequencers cos sometimes it helps creativity and it looks good but I found that a prog works better for me. |

Hi
only circumstance i noticed midi latecy was that teh midi clock is not steady when syncing external delay units. I simply fixed teh tempo on that unit which solved that issue. Anything else is pretty tight. I found out that the hardware way is working better for me especially when using external moduls only which i do. NIce to hear that your re happy with your setup. I prayed many times to get my dream setup. Finally Im pretty complete. Before that i had a G5 with Logic Pro which was totally pita. I had that sudden channel death issue which is widely discussed on borads across the net and which only seems to be appear on Dual G5 2GHz machines. Even in Logic Pro 7.2 this issues wasnt fixed yet. That was my turn into my current direction. Luckily I can work with my new setup. The beginning was very hard Thats why im wondering if anybody else out there is on a similar path of mine.
Ah with latency I mainly meant teh point that its pretty high latency when yousing External modules in conjunction with Software when streaming audio into teh computer. Or if you mix teh external gear on a external mixer and route teh computer to that mixer aswell. Anytime latency which is much higher that any midi delay.
Logics lowest buffer was 512. I think if you spend a dedicated midi port to each critical Midi unit it is more stable.
Love and Light and yeah be Happy aswell

real time song production with real synths not vsts (so sexy but so expensive)
more hands on control
more blinking lights and knobbys
Im using korg electribe A's for sequencers. I would like to get a Future retro MOBIUS.
I hear great things about the yamaha rm1x. Its more software than hardware to me, a great interface.

I'm with ya. I use a pair of yamaha RS7000's for my live set, I absolutly love them. I've never been more productive since I switched to hardware sequencing from just working on the computer. It's so easy to come up with songs on hardware, for me anyways, it's so fast. plus realtime controls for midi delays, clock shift/stretch, swing, etc., yeah, plenty of knobs. The menu's are easy enough as well, it doesn't take any thought to change what I need to. yeah it can be limiting on some things, but you get creative in other ways instead.
I still have to go to the computer to actually finish/produce a song, but that's ok, the best of both worlds.
I'd really like to try out this thing though: http://www.spectralis.de/

i have to disagree... hardware crashes too!
i used a mc505 for years and i have to say that the interface rules, but i noticed some crashes... i also got several electrical shocks from it, whence the earth loop was not good.
good points: dedicated knobs and blinking leads (aka user interface)
down points: i get about 100 levels of undo on software...
  roll a joint or STFU :) |

i only use my hardware sequencer to make quick midi-recordings from my hardware. Because its easy and quick to set up, but then i dump it into cubase to have a more visual and slick interface to edit it. I use a roland MC-500MkII, and it never crashed.. It only starts breaking down if it has to send massive amounts of automation (tracks that drop and come back, automation that doesn't get sent, etc...). Even with the older versions of the OS it never crashed, i'd trust it blindly. |
