Hi guys,
I have 2 questions -
I have a P4 2.66 w/ 1 GB Ram, Audiophile 2496 soundcard. I use Sonar 3 rewired to Reason. And I use softsynths only...
1. I have a High CPU usage problem all the time, so was wondering if there is any additional hardware one can buy besides upgrading the entire CPU, that can make life easier?
2. What equipment is necessary to record a really clean and strong sound out of your computer, once you have composed your track? Is exporting to audio from the audiophile enough?
thank you all very much! |

Sorry... what do you mean? Why would you want to record the signal exiting your computer through the sound card? Surely you just export to audio and then burn to CD or whatever, and this doesnt use the sound card or any other extra equipment.
Also.... powercore might be a good idea, but be careful because these DSP cards' plugins can introduce a big delay into the audio path which might screw up your timings unless you are careful. If you are using Cubase SX 2 or Sonar 3 (not sure about others) then you are ok because these compensate for this delay.
Maybe you could just export individual parts to audio more frequently with FX applied to cut down on CPU issues?

crystal dude, your computer is a BombShell!
you just have to learn to work cleaner.
I finished a 8 minutes track with about 40-50 audio channels and the cpu meter was lower than 40!!
Vst plugs `n Vst Instruments are the source to cpu problems. Export every sound you got and work on clean channels.

1st, P4 2.66 with 1GB Ram is ok for making music even though it's never enough,
Do you still have a high cpu usage when runing cubase alone(not rewired)? - try run cubase and check it with a few instruments and effects to see if the problem remains,
If runing cubase alone does not load your cpu usage then you might have problem with reason, try reinstall it and check around, if not then try:
Update you audio card drivers,
Check for any damaged vst instruments or effects, such may load the cpu usage
uninstall unnecessary instruments/effects.
reinstall cubase and reason if needed.
Regarding "What equipment is necessary to record a really clean and strong sound out of your computer?"
You already have what you need, learn how to use it and get a good pair of monitors
good luck mate Space is the place

thanks guys! Yeah I figured my computer config. was fine...but still get dropouts in Sonar 3.
When I dont rewire to reason the load is much less, but according to me I should be able to get quite a few channels of Audio even with Reason rewired.
My question about the soundcard though was that, does it make a difference to the quality of sound by getting a better soundcard than the Audiophile? Or is it just the workflow that is better?
thanks again! |

It makes a quality if you record stuff from external devices. My delta 66 records stuff at a much higher quality then the old sound blaster I had a long time ago.
Working on higher quality settings also matters (especially working on 24bit). If your current card can support 24 bit, I see no reason to change it unless you need recording capabilities or lower latency.
