well, that's an easy one:
no amplifier + electronic music = no sound
seriously, simply go for the active version ( http://alesis.com/products/m1active/ ) if you want Alesis MKII Monitors.
greetings
edit: one minute late, pls overlook that |

I have Alesis M1 Active Mk2, and my buddy has got the passive version (M1 Mk2) and I absolutely think you should go for the active one. He uses his pair of monitors with an Alesis studioamplifier, wich costs around the same as mine (active) does. I think the active one have alot better sound, the only thing I would say negative about them, is that I think it produces a little to much bass. This may have something to do with mye small room and bad speaker placing. But they play hisgh as hell |

Well if you know that, what's the problem? I have them too an I noticed that too. For me the best way to find the right balance is to compare your songs live on a p.a., at home on your monitors, normal speakers in your car etc... I know producers who just have headphones (no monitors) who work the same way and they get better sound then a lot of people here with fancy monitors.

i think the "test everywhere" rotine is a must even with the best monitors possible
it's a part of learning "the truth about your monitoring" wich will enable you to mix with more confidence...

Hey guys, thanks for all the help. Now i found out i have another little problem, hehe, i am from Brasil but im working on Germany, so im gonna buy it here and take it to Brasil, the problem is that the Alesis aktiv weight a lot (about 17 kilos the pair, out of 30 i can carry), what do you think of m-audio's DX5??
Thanks,
Marcelo. |

I think weight is a bad parameter for choosing monitors. Can't you buy extra room/weight on an airplane? |

if im not mistaken they weight about 17kilos the whole box....
and i also think its very worth having the active ones
they are bi amplified meaning each speaker has 2 integrated amplifiers, one for the subs and one for the mid-highs, and they are made exacly for the speakers
also i think the passive ones have the sub holes in the back, wich will make you need more room space to put them further away from the walls (their room position is REALLY important to get the right sound!) |

the problem with accurate monitoring seems that it's not enough to have good monitors, you need to buy house with good areas too
  roll a joint or STFU :) |

Shure they're active. The one thats aren't active is Alesis m1 or monitor1. m1 mk2 are biamplified.
if you want go for it. its good for the money it costs. i've got them and im very pleased |

that's so true...
I've got a pair of MKII passive (I know, cheap bastards ), I use them with a professional PA-Amplifier (what a expensive bitch that was 6 years ago) I've got left from the older days.
when I first set them up, the bass was really an overkill, it wasn't really muddy, but way too loud. So I changed the position in the room a bit and now it's fine.
play around with the Position in the room and the room at all. You can easily fuck up even the best sounding monitors if they are placed wrong.

The problem on trying to send to Brasil by mail is that the (excuse me the language) FUCKIN goverment asks for 70% taxes, so it will almost double the price. |
