hi

ive been making music mostly in the box, except for maybe a little guitar which i record straight to the souncard input.
I just received an old analog desk a yamaha mc1602 which ive heard has good eq and preamp channels, so i wanna use it manly for recording guitar , bass and vocals. i ve tried it on standalone mode just plugin the instruments through it and the output straight to the monitors and it does sound very good. the problem is when i try to record the output of the mixer into my laptop, it sounds horrible. wanna know if there is a connection problem (dont know shit about that kinda stuff) or is the mixer problem?. i tried connecting the main and auxiliary outputs of the yamaha into the input of my laptop computer cause the indigo i have doesnt have any inputs, so can this be the problem and how i solve it?. the sound recorded is like extremetely distorted..maybe a power issue??           www.soundcloud.com/elektroakustica/sets/downtempo/

If it sounds good on the monitors then maybe you're just clipping the input on your soundcard?

Probably the mixer has +4dBu output while the soundcard has -10dBv input.
Have you tried reducing the output level on the mixer?

If i understood correctly he's recording into the microphone input on his laptop. That's most likely causing the problem.

If that is indeed the case then you need to get an interface with i/o's which your indigo is missing.           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

I agree with Spindrift and Get-a-fix, the signal coming out of your mixer is probably too "strong/hot" for your laptop input.

Check out to see if you have a button/selector on your mixer to choose between +4dBu and -10dBv, you need the mixer's output to be in -10dBv if it has it.

Or.... if you have more "master" outs from your mixer (2track, main and secondary outs) try using them instead of the ones you are using now, there's a chance one of them will be working on -10dBv.

If not, either try having the mixer output not as loud/hot or get an external soundcard with +4dBv inputs. It'll be stated in the soundcard's specifications.

The auxes are +4dB indeed.
Try the headphones out or lower the volume.

seems the only thing you can do to get good quality on long terms is getting a new interface with switchable inputs

I dont know if lowering the volume that much and still going into the mic in of the laptop will give you a better result...(concerning s/n ratio and the laptops adc)

Like Ohm line I definitely would go with Spindrifts and Getafix advice. Many times it is just the mixer which needs its output changed from +4db to -10db ! And a proper interface would indeed help!           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

yeah i will defenitely need a new interface if i wanna start using "real instruments", i just want to know if the mixer is any good before deciding which soundcard to get..
thanx for the advice , will try all of them specially the headphone out, since i tried the auxiliary outputs too, with lower volume ..
thanx again.
