Hi ! Same thing happened to me few weeks ago, hd crash, lost everything… I don't know what os you use but on OSX you have that great app "Data Rescue" that allow you to recover your files, it helped me recover 99% of my hd ! Cost a little, but totally worth it.
Hope you find what you seek.

You have tons of data restorations programs,if you have stuff that you really need, try those. If you need specific names,I can check.           From all the things I lost, that sandwitch cost me most :)

very important and stuff that you cant find out there (your photos, your projects, your music generally stuff that you create) is better to have em also in dvds somewhere in a closed box and protected.

believe me this will gonna help you in the future in simillar situations.           ...into the wild....

perfect

and my disk, it's gone, beyond repair.. some data recovery guys are willing to have a look at it but it'll cost me a lot so I'm thinking I'll just do everything from scratch again

This happens to everybody sooner or later and ususally at least once before anybody starts changing their backup routines.

After it has happened:
1. get at least two or three different data-recovery programs and run them through. You should be able to rescue at least 50-80% I guess if no major mechanical problems. Key is you do it the first thing.

2. Always run several backups. One for the days work, one for the week, and one off-site for long term storage.

3. Got spare solutions. The best tools are the ones you can throw away when you are done. If you cannot live without kick samples, how about learning to make them yourself?
