Hey all, just in the process of setting up a new lappy and was wondering what would be the best way to setup my disks.

Ive got the main laptop internal drive (7200rpm) (its a 100gb bootcamped windows partition, the other 60gb is for osx)

ive also got western digital fw/usb2 500gb external.

im not sure performance wise what the best location would be for my samples and project files etc. the external or the primary drive?

thanks for your help

I would place your samples on the internal drive and then split the external to say 20/480, using the 20 only on your current project. Make sure the 20 is at the front of the drive i.e. first sector. This will be quicker. The 480 would then act as storage for all your other projects. You could add a third partition for backing up your operating system, this is a very good idea if you have got the system running well. Also it can make defraging easier as you can do one partition at a time.

I'de save samples on the external disk and use a temporary directory on the internal (using the "Copy files to working directory" feature) and by that saving static Data on the slower disk and dinamic Data on the faster one.           https://soundcloud.com/avivtech

project files should be on the faster disks including the recording and all related data- i say even the samples-

Cubasing is like Freebasing, just with audio.
Both cost more than you can afford, and leaves you sitting in a dark room with no life, craving for more.

Firewire 800 is way faster then USB 2.0 (800Mbps Vs. 480Mbps) and both are slower than the SATA2 protocol your hard drive is connected to the computer with (3.0Gbps).

The fastest solution would be on the internal hard drive (especially if it's a 7200RPM which is the same speed as your external drive unless you bought a WD Raptor which revolvs at 10K) though unless you're running lots (20 upwards) of audio tracks, it doesn't really matters where you keep the projects as all the protocols mentioned above will be more than adaquate.
