i mean that we CAN'T do mastering. what most people perceive as 'mastering' in here, is actually part of the production of a track (like mixdown). i am not saying we shouldn't do any 'mastering' if we wish to play our tracks at a party, i was just pointing out that it is the wrong word to use.. not a big deal, it's just not "politically correct" (if anyone understands what i am saying.....)           .

EYB m8e, there's a big difference in A.starting and/or learning how to do smth and B.actually being able to do it. for sure it is good to start learning how some things work and i agree that if u never start doing smth u will never learn how to do it. but, let's not fool ourselves, we cannot perform actual and proper mastering.

mastering is performed in a dedicated studio with quiet, calibrated acoustics where signal paths are kept to a minimum. the mastering engineer is a specialist who spends his entire time perfecting the craft of mastering. he's got good ears, great equipment and heavy technical knowledge.

therefore my opinion is that -unless someone qualifies for all the above- we cannot do a proper mastering. what we can do is pretend we are "mastering" (in the name of learning), or what i call a 'pseudo-mastering', which is actually part of the production and not the mastering (again IMO).

anyway, i don't want to argue on this one. my personal opinion is that we shouldn't use the word 'mastering' unless we are fully capable of doing it...

To some point, all there is to mastering is to make sure every track in an album has stable dynamics and loudness (you should need to touch the volume dial when listening to an album), enough loudness to stand out when played in a DJ set, radio, etc and a RCA curve (i don't know what it is, but i think must be some Recording Industry standard).

To master your tracks you have to master mastering first (lolololol)
