You surely encontered the situation that a lead or percussion sounds good in the mix but it drives the total mix level to red. I personally having difficultie in these situations, coz lowering the volume, compressing or limiting or even reducin the attack of it solves the excessive overall levels, but that pushes this particular sound to the background or it gets too quite.
I regularly allow the frequencies to have thier own space, but sometimes whatever I do can't get good results.
how you guys tackle this problem?
-------------------------------------------------
youre not compressing as you should be. that y they have compressors.
u can export the sound and manually edit the peaks and there you go .... problem solved.
if u dig deep enough u just might reach the sky...
also before you compress apply something like voxengo span as the last plugin on that channel, check where your frequencies are really high and then eq out. Afterwards compress... I found compression quite useful with leads at times...

keep practicing with your eqing. Try reading tarekiths mixing guide here... this is a real goldmine
eg. if you're used to make the kickbass and then start mixing everything on it, in next track you make when you're done with the kickbass, put channel fader(s) at -6db or even lower... or even even lower.. and then continue with your track.
everything we'll be in perfect loudness after the mastering process
yes headroom problem. Ive started to mix my newest tracks superquiet (typically -25db on the kick), I just turn up the amps It seems to give me better control and way better soundquality when the sounds dont have to fight eachother... the overall punch and clerity is better for sure...
Just compress in the right way (experiment with attack and release, is important to get the sound to stand out)
and be sure to mix other levels at an appropriate rate

Also,to increase your headroom more...
if u have multi outputs audio interface u can route each ch. to different outputs HTTP://www.decadancerecords.it/audioplug

does it sound bad when hitting the red? if no then just leave it like that, or you could lower all the tracks in volume to get the same balance in the mix no need compression or limiter for that and leave more head room when you start your next track so you re not bothered with things like that.

I would say to be careful with the red. You may hear what it sounds like on your speaker, but you don't necessarily know what it sounds like on a different set or even on a PA. I always eliminate the red zone at earliest sight Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

OK..... now I'm confused -------------------------------------------------
Interesting... Will try to mix my next track 6 dB quieter, but for now I don't understand why the quality should improve. My kick+bass is usually -6 -7 dB, and I very rarely have peaks on master higher than -1 dB, though I don't use compressors a lot...

I usually work with elements routed to different groups so instead of having to lower every channel fader when there is a over i just reduce the levels of all the groups. This way the balance of the mix stays the same.

i still dont get it... i tested alot with compressors...
example a lead wich got to loud parts in it... i tried to fix that, no success at all...
and if this isnt working, i dont get the point of compressing.
i do everything with the EQ.
a compressor should kick in when some freqs are to loud right?
in this case i would understand the multibandcompressor, because you can set the freq you need...
