paying customers, sound engineers and myself. compare it with Neve or SSL and you'll know what I'm talking about. still it doesn't make it a bad console for psy for sure. |

Comparing Soundcraft to Neve and SSL isn't a fair comparison. |

Taste
For me a good desk should have a bad colour scheme and be a bit ugly....it looks a bit more like a neve then
Mackies look more like some japanse hi-fi part than a proper desk IMO.

Paying customers and engineers that know what they're talking about, do not compare Spirit desks that cost from $250 to $800 (used...Soundcraft don't make them any more)
to used SSL desks, that cost from about $25,000 (basic 32 channel) to $300,000 (72 channel J9000 series).
I am using a Spirit studio 8 desk and have no probs with it (although more than 6 auxes would have been nice).
You get what you pay for mate.
Anyway, get a couple of nice outboard pres to get the warmth you are looking for and simply use the desk for routing and mixing the audio you've recorded through the more expensive pres.
Job's a good one and you've got some cash left to go for a few pints down your local pub.

The point was that there is warmth and there is WARMTH. Of course the comparision isn't fair, but who said it needs to be. Even when I used the Spirit with a focusrite pres, it still didn't sound warm.
BTW, The console in that picture doesn't cost $800 even if it's used, abused and half of the channels not working. |

Well...if it needs to be I don't know.
But if it's not fair it's utterly pointless offcourse.
What desk would you recommend to people who might be considering an analogue desk for below $5000 and want a warm sounding desk rather than a sterile mackie?

I'ts hard to recommend without knowing what your needs are. Are you going to record acustic drums ?, guitars ? hardware synth ?
Most electronic musicians are only recording vocals, so the mixer is only used for monitoring, not mixing. In that case there is no point in buying an analog mixer, you better spend your money on a good tube mic and a pre mic. you could also use the pre mic to re-record your soft synth and get warmer sound.
