Have you tried halion sonic se which comes with cubase 6 ?
I tested the demo and was a bit disappointed how small some GUI elements are

I am curious to try out H4 as well:)

nope havent tried it, halion 4 have the synth engine or not? would be amazing.

With FL alone you can't do Multisamples etc. but with Directwave somehow.

Multisampling is used to Built Sampler Instruments across multiple octaves to preserve the original charakter of the source instrument.
Just try to play just one sample across 2 octaves

Beside the horizontal dimension (pitch) the vertical dimension (velocity) is also used to create velocity sensitive instruments.
Hard hit drums sound different than soft hits...

Last but no least keyswitching could be used to realize even more expressive instruments.
