Hey guys,
I always wanted to see what it would be like to watch some video and make music to what I'm watching..
So today I tried it with pretty darn good results. Way more inpiration, WAY faster production. More musical variety as a scene would change.
What I did was...I put a laptop on my mixing desk [to the left of me] on a free area of my desk. I fired up FL Studio 5 [most basic work gets done with this program] and just loaded vanguard for example [easy]...
I would watch the laptop screen while playing notes on the keyboard. and occasionaly look at my main crt monitor of course..
My movie of choice was Waterworld [lol don't bash its a good movie] and so yeah, I just watched the movie and played vanguard to make some melodies to what I was viewing. Long story short, the inspiration flowed to me really fast, way faster then when I'm usually just staring at my sequencer's background image [which is usually some form of concept art, I change it to inspire whatever I'm producing]. In this case I made a pretty darn good actually.. soundtrack style track.
So I will probably do this more often lol.
edit..I should add that the movie is completely muted! haha |

I did this before yeah, with rock though, which is strange. But I used to have the little studio setup of the past in the room with a tv, so I was making music and watching Terminator 2 in between track recordings. Really fun.
In your case, this is interesting. You don't have to completely mute the movie haha unless you know the movie by heart.
A side note: did you take any quotes from the movie?
and
when are you going to post the track? =)

well i wanted to mute it so that i couldn't hear any of James Newton Howard's work.
..I have sampled waterworld in a 2005 production I sampled the words ''go juice'' from the deacon.
I'll post the track when its ready, its not 100 percent done yet. |
