Hi there
Just wondering if anyone has got any ideas, suggestions, tips or recommendations on getting nice guitar sounds for psytrance apart from the obvious choice of using hardware FX?
I am currently recording guitar and have used and intend to use in future for tracks.
I have found slayer and Guitar Rig (v3) to be effective though slayer takes a bit of playing about with to get a clear non "muddy" sound and Guitar rig has some excellent psychedelic effects which can produce synth type sounds from a guitar.
Also any suggestions on soundcard settings for playing or recording to avoid the inevitable latency (sometimes its possible to play a note, nip out to the shop come back make a cuppa and return to the studio just in time for the note to sound!)
Also Does anyone have any experience of midi guitars?
Recommendations on FX for distortion, phaser, delay, reverb and FX that turn the guitar sound into a synth type sound would be great (VST or even hardware).
Some people love guitars in psytrance others not so keen but any ideas would be great.

personally since i came from a rock background, i really dig guitars in psytrance! slayer 2 can be a great emulator if you tweak it enough and just play with it. Guitar rig is also a good as you mentioned but i haven't used it that much... i don't play guitar so i can't give you any tips there besides just have your distortion or fx on the track your recording your guitar on, and just jam to the beat and lay down some ideas. Midi Guitars seem legit but i couldn't tell you much about them since i haven't used one yet. but if you used slayer 2 or something similar and play on the midi guitar etc... you can get actually VERY real sounding results http://soundcloud.com/brentmalik

imo there is a wide range of guitar usage in psy, just to give some examples:
-funky chords
-short palm muted heavy distorted power chords
-metal riffs
-flamenco guitar stuff
-solos (distorted or clean)
most important is that you can play it properly and have a feeling where you can place the guitar parts best in a track.
my first guitar i used in a track you can hear about @ 2:55 played along with amoebas great synthwork. my guitar skills are not perfect, so ive had to chopp alot of the recorded guitar....

Hey everyone
Thanks for the info and advice
Yep some of the sun project stuff got me hooked on psy dances with witches and also other artists around the time (tracks like "stranded")
Been getting some nice sounds playing higher notes/solo notes or what sound like eastern scales and also processing stretching samples and reversing the guitar samples once played in.
Also quantizing audio a process I dreamed of and wanted for many years which has now become a reality that the technology has advanced, this has helped with latency problems saving a lot of time.
Im currently using a SaffireLE soundcard and suffer latency because there are quite a few settings it means there are many variables when trying to optimise if anyone knows what levels are good for the following:
ASIO Buffer Size, Firewire buffersize, and buffer size in DAW (IE 1586 samples)please get in touch would be a great help.
Also if anyone knows if settings on drive error compensation should be amended when recording guitar any info would be a great help.
As a final note any reccomendations on a decent guitar FX pedal in the £100 - £400 range also greatly appreciated.

I love guitars in trance
I normaly just go direct into my soundcard with my bass and electric guitar, and i did some tracks In wich i miked my acoustic guitar
here is my project with guitars
in the first 1 minute there is a directly recorded bass guitar and a electric guitar thats going through guitar rig.
and in the second minute there is a recorded acoustic guitar by using a blue microphones snowball mic
but recentlly when i need some electric guitars I ask a friend to record it on his gear a nice tube amp and a great guitar

I realy like using the Johnson J Station:
It has a digital out, midi Connection with
a software for creating and stores soundsettings and it sounds realy wonderfull!
and it is realy cheap-
I bought my on ebay for 80€ some years ago.

Guitar rig is all u need for guitar sounds and effects u can make synths like sounds with it. u can chain something like Camel Space to make more crazy stuff.
if u wanna play some synths (vst) with the guitar u can get a midi pickup+converter like Roland GK-3, GI-20 or the cheap sonuus (only monophonic). Midi guitars sucks and overpriced imo go for a pickup.
if u have the guitar rig kontrol u dont need fx pedal. if u still wish to get one go for Vox Tonelab LE multi-effects. its the best.
about latency contact focusrite there's have to be a way to fix it.
