I got a sick sounding lead guitar using Slayer 1 and then Image Line's Hardcore VST. Slayer 2 doesn't sound the same way though even with the same settings. :shrug           http://soundcloud.com/short-circuit

Ok, I was going to get into more elaborate detail on this, but didn't get the chance till now. The best guitar sound is recorded to what you want to begin with instead of emulating it, it's just easier IMO. But if you want a riff or solo you can't physically play, then this is what you want to use.

For Slayer 1, a really good lead (soloing) guitar has these settings which are basically broken down into two groups. "Guitar" control, and "Hand" control:

HAND : these knobs control your hand movements including angle of attack, how fast your moving your hand, pick depth and angle.

Mode : solo dynamic. This is how your right hands moves across the strings and how you play the strings. Using the following settings and then changing this single setting to different ones for what you plan on playing. (rhythm or lead parts)

Speed : Just above the 3 o clock position. this knob basically controls how your holding your pick, and the angle of attack on the strings. By holding at just the right angle, one can achieve faster playing speeds, but the note looses some of it's tone.

Glissando : UP. for soloing, left hand control. up gives you smooth hammer-ons and pull-off simulation like using multiple fingers to hit a note. a long note and then short overlapped notes will give this effect. down is like sliding a single finger from fret to fret. makes is sound sloppy unless you want this effect.

Slap : all the way left. this is how the right hand slaps the strings when your playing. for soloing, you want to play your notes at the right speed (speed control) and keep your hand close to center to not produce any slap, which sounds like a sloppy guitar player.

Fret : also all the way left. this is left hand control. it controls how you place your fingerbehind the fret and how hard your holding it. it controls "fret buzz", or sloppy playing.

Harmonic : 1 o clock position. this is picking style and positioning. there are natural harmonics and ultra harmonics at different places on the guitar, and playing a notes and placing the pick at the right angle whith the very edge of the pick, and also getting the edge of the string with your thumb too, (get all that...lol) creates a higher pitch, "pinch" harmonic. this knob controls all that.
(harmonic) Velocity : 2 o clock position. controls how much thumb to pick ratio which gives more often harmonics.

Damp : all the way left, then up just a hair - just a little! This is the right hand control on palm muting, or how much of your hand is touching the strings to mute them as they are plucked.
(damp) velocity. between 10 and 11 o clock. this is about how far away from the bridge and strings your hand is. You never want to take your right hand too far away from the strings because then you might lose control over the overall sound, or have other strings start to ring out uncontrolably while soloing. Your hand should be just far enough away to feel the buzz of the strings and keep them buzzing just right.

GUITAR: These controls are for how your guitar is set up. positioning and materials used for your guitar

Hold : On for soloing, off for chugging.

String : The best one I think is the 6string3. You can try fretless for smoother transitions between notes, but gets a little sloppy

Coils : Double. which gives it a warmer sound. When you pluck a string, it resonates, the coil, which is basically a magnetic field that picks up the sound waves as it passes through them. single coil is a more narrow magnetic field path than double coil which makes a warmer sound.

Coil Position : Middle and then to the left 1/8". This variable is how to control "twang" in the string, kind of like a fast attack / sustain envelope filter. moving towards the bridge gives more twang, closer to the neck gives warmth. This is also because as the string is plucked, it resonates into the wood body, which then travels through the wood to the side of the coil, which resonates as well with the sound waves picked up from above. The further away from the bridge, the longer the resonation = warmth.

Pitch Bend : I have this all the way down, automate for natural sounding left hand bends and vibratos

Tone : all the way right, the back off a little. This controls brightness just like the tone control on the guitar.

Amp Section.
I used dry on all amp, cabinet, and signal processors. The ones in Slayer make it sound too much like a synthasised guitar and not a real one. It's way better to use secondary distortions and effects instead of these IMO.

Good Luck and happy programming!           http://soundcloud.com/short-circuit
