Guide to ...... Perfect Pitch
(which will enable you to analyze/play by ear)
Download the muse book tuner from http://www.musebook.com/?page=mbtuner_down
download version 2.2 not 2.20 (if ur smart u will understand why )
conect ur mic
start the tuner
start Reason and load a 'grand piano' patch
Using a midi controler or the piano roll play the note 'C' (any octave within your vocal range is fine)
listen carefully as it sounds then play it again - this time singing the note as you play (mic).
Use the tuner to check if ur singing the right note (pitching correctly).
If your pitching is incorrect your voice will sound 'sharp' or 'flat' (or may be show a completely different note on the tuner!).
Its OK if the note played is in a higher or lower octave than the C note your singing because both notes will 'gel' together (harmonics).
Repeat this exercise with diffrent note's going up and down diffrent scales (chordhouse.com).
Then do it again picking random notes.
Advanced level - Play chords (triads, 7ths, sus...) and try and recognise/sing every note in the cord.
Hopefully after some weeks (maybe months) of practice you could (almost) have Perfect Pitch...
XXXXX THE END XXXXX

when i get back home, ill give this a try. i was told i have perfect pitch. i can sing most any scale by memory/ear. im curious to see if i actually have "perfect pitch". thanks for the info. my band director in high school was impressed as i could find any note he named at random without a reference. for example, he would say "c" and i could find it without having to hear it first. i impressed myself, but i find it hard to believe its actually "perfect" |

metacortex - ever since i started to listen active to tones i have been getting a better sense for hearing which kind of tone it is... and of course tuning the guitar has given alot of insight...
The tuner i bought and the music theory practising has helped alot aswell.
So active listening while playing piano or keyboard or anyother instrument which has the tones of the octave is good training...
it will be interesting when i start to memorize and recognize different scales... lots of work for me, cause im more of a rhythmic dude... and for that matter i practise rhythm aswell....
nice topic... |
