Hi guys... what channels do u usually group together?... also, do you find group compressing a good idea? if so, what do you usually group compress other than percussion?

I'm trying to achieve a more 'flat' mixing... flat meaning not that much peaks on my channels so i get more overall headroom.

Thanks.

I usually group my elements respectively to frequency domains - low, mids, hights.
this way, each group will be appropriately equalized.

Again its a matter of preference, but i like to group my kick n bass, so that i can put some automated filters. also from thereon, i like to run a sidechain compressor regarding my percussion and hats "duck" the kick. my mids group could have a sidechain towards kick as well with some parallel compression and automated fx.

so to answer your question, you would get the most headroom out of equalization, compression and in instance where there is a kick or drum roll-limiting.

also... you can experiment with putting fx and samples into mono, that would reduce unwanted particles thereby increasing headroom.

Groups are vital. Check the examples:

1. kick and bass - mostly because the same filter is applied to them in 99% of occasions.
2. percussions and hats - mainly because the same reverb is applied to them and in group it is easier to control many pieces of perc together.
3. in case i need to apply some special chain of effects to several tracks simultaneously i use groups.

There is nothing bad in compressing several similar leads in one group. However one has to bear in mind that if heavy compression is applied and two or more grouped leads are playing simultaneously some of the sounds can be compressed too much and disappear while others might go too loud.

However having all these powerful computers today it is possible to apply a vst compressor and eq for each lead separately, so i don't really do groups for that.

I, usually don't group anything, except the kick/bass after eq/sc, for fx/filtering purposes. I like to have every sound on a single fx channel, cuz i eq a lot and use too much fx. From time to time i do group hihats/perc and/or leads, but not often.           Triplag Music

group goes on everything
many many groups and sends

same eq cut or pass, reverb, side chain, make like a multiband compressor chain sub, low, low mid etc
and compress them a tricky thing cause with some sounds you want to leave the highs or some bass...
cuttoff filter also. basicaly i like to make a lot of chains           http://soundcloud.com/magimix-1/chilling-forest-whispers

my groups:
low
low-mid
mid
high
SFX

all nicely coloured. I "learned" it that way and it has proven helpful.

none usually, if i want to make a crazy mixdown wiht like 8 channels for each instrument all panned crazy I group em together so i can EQ or effect the whole bunch. Usually I do that with a secondary mixdown using stems (sometimes its hard to get a good mixdown with cpu maxing all the time).

Initial mixdown I usually send the kick and bass to their own send with a 3 band EQ on it to lower the high end and raise the mid. Renoise's 3 band lets you choose the peaking mid frequency and its Q too which i like. When i want to have some kind of effect on all the percussion i send em all to their own send track. Usually if I want to do secondary mixdown with stems, i send the perc to one channel so all the percussion is in one stem.

I never use any compression, just a maximizer in post production with an out ceiling of -0.1db and a threshold about 1db higher than the highest peaks.

But thats how i do it, and i couldn't say the way i do it is at all the best way. I think it sounds good though.

Kick/Bass
Percussion
Pads
FX
Leads

K/B gets some limiting and occasionally compression. The rest are there mainly to get sent to reverbs.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound
