If you're talking about a Roland Groovebox, u're talking about (x-cuse my french) an utter shite machine, that doesn't deserve any credits !!! Stay away from them !!! |

hey hey hey!!!
give them their credit...these are classic
electronic instruments, wich the electronic groove began with in the earlt 80's...
some can be nice...but with the softsamplers,
and samples you can get today...leave it
in the shop were you saw it... |

most of the groove boxes are some kind of compromise between sequencer\drum machine\sampler\bass synth
it's nice to have if you're preforming live, but even then I'll prefer a laptop. |

so they somthing like a "virtual studio" almost , an hardware if i'm correct.
so if there some money it's better to buy a synth?
i would love to read your opinions and anything you like to share with me about your own use with the synth or recommendations.

What groove box has to do with synthesiser? Groove box is sampler with default grooves to ease you at live performance. Synthesiser is something different at all. If you are producer but not live performer, i will advice to buy synth as you want because groove box in studio make me feel sick. |

Bullshit! Have you even ever seen one? Ok, the sounds are presets but these presets consist also of squares, saws, sines etc...
And no synthesis? Also bullshit. On the 505 you can LFO, env and tweak what you want. It's not only presetpatterns that you play live. Please be informed before you post lies. I'm not saying it's good (sound does suck) but I for example have learned (the basics of) synthesis on this machine. It was a good machine back then, now it can't compete with "free" software. |

Any sampler contains waveforms, it goes for filtering nor synthesis. I'm not sure about what are you talking, must be Roland, so it might have basic synthesis functions but synthesiser allows you much more than any groove box.
One thing i argee, billy ambulance said something without to check. Modul is modul, Sampler is sampler and Presets are presets. |

i disagree... i wouldn't advice a 505 for trance but it contains 256 or 512 (cant remember) waveforms wich is more than an average analog synth can do.
it also has modulation: lfos, envelopes, 4 types of filters with resonance, the ring modulation and more advanced stuff usual in all digital roland synths
the only problem i see w/ it is the filter not sounding analog but will squeal harder than most vst crap.

basically a groovebox (or similar products from other manufacturers) is a relatively cheap all-in-one box.
it's good for starters to get familiar with some concepts of making music.
but they are often limited in all area's.
one good thing about them is that you can get results pretty fast.
otoh you can't make complex arrangements and effects and stuff.
so, if you are an absolute beginner or dj-oriented then it may be a good thing for you.
if you are serious about sequencing, synthesis etc then it is more or less a toy.
also, be aware that the cheapest grooveboxes can have limitations in realy bad places.

Depends on what you consider basic. Most people sell the machine with the phras "too basic, too kiddy" before they even got to the sub (sub) menus. The synthesis goes quite far imo. I also have a microkorg (quite simple but decent VA) and I must qay that the roland mc-505 can do much of the synthesis my microkorg can do. The reasons why it isn't suitable for trance are (imo) the time consuming way of structuring (sequence), the lack of power (nothing to do with synthesis, for example: this machine is good for other, less agressive genres), the fact that you can only apply 1 reverb,1 delay and 1 efx at your choice for all the channels and the lack of a good unisone detune.
So, conclusion: good machine at the time, too much bashing on it but indeed not suitable for psytrance.
oh, and i forgot the most important reason why I stopped using it: midi... |

hmm... i used mine w/ midi alongside soft sequencers.
also... check this groovebox: http://www.spectralis.de/english/english.html
the rave-o-lution is also quite good and very cheap (a little more limited)
i think the 505 is suitable for other genres than psy trance
i would use it for progressive, for instance.
i recognize a lot of the 505 sounds in records of some artists, like Peaches for instance.
in her early albuns you could hear a lot of sounds from the 505... the main sound from "set it off" sounded very alike one of the presets. and the 909 sounds were used throught the whole album |
