Hey... most producers i know in real life use loop samples like from vengeance, for percussion and eventho i understand they can save hours of groove editting i still want to know how to create my grooves from scratch.

I've noticed most trance rythms use snare as a sound that empowers the whole groove combined with openhats.

I was wondering if you could give me some advice on placement, swing, or general pattern tips. I don't want no recipe just to know if there is any common knowledge guidelines i could use to make a snappy punchy psy groove.

A simple but driving percussion.

Snares on the 2s and 4s
Open Hats on beat and off beat (1, 1.3, 2, 2.3 etc)
Open Hats on - 1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc)

Add in some funky fills at the end of every 4 or 8 bars, and play around with reversing, time stretching and processing different events differently.

grouping all drums and applying fx on the group helps often           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

take Albino, 2 noise generators, top set to white, bottom to pink, make a short atack and release in both osc, play around with your lfo's and send them to filter, then use the arpeggiator and set it to something like 15 or 13 steps...

Thanks for the comments guys, already testing some of this. I have been experimenting big time creating my own loops and also learning because i didn't know anything about percs before... i mean just the basic four on the floor but now im begining to understand.

I have a couple of questions if any one could answer i'd be very thankful.

- How do u use swing? What should i take into acount when swinging perc loops. How is it applyed to psy rythms.

- How can i arrange percs in order to make my track feel speedy, please don't answer "triplets".
I want to achieve those kinda grooves where the openhat and the snare sound like big scisors and all little hats sound very quick and groovy.

I do actually understand where to place openhats and snares, but everytime i want i say well let's make this different and give a little twist i just end with non dynamic grooves and boring loops that make me wanna born again and become a drummer... so since i cannot do that, advice is greatly apreciated.

cheers.

How you actually go about adding swing differs depending on your sequencer..what are you using? You don't want too much in psy, or it might sound excessively bouncey and not tight enough. Just listen carefully..somewhere between sounding like a cheap drum machine and a jazz drummer.

How would triplets help your track feel "speedy"? I'm not understanding the whole big scissors(?) thing. "Quick" imo = fast decay and decent amount of swing.

All I can say other than that is that there are no rules..I don't think I've used the "hats on upbeats, snare on 2's and 4's" rhythm for a while. Listen to rhythms you like and try to recreate them, then tweak them a little and just keep experimenting with everything. Some of the best grooves I've ever made have resulted from accidentally moving notes in the midi track. Percussion doesn't have to be just hats and snares either..don't limit yourself to realistic sounds when there are endless possibilities.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

Only Open Hats ? Doesn't that sound a bit messy ? (I have yet to try it though)

whoops, my mistake. The latter should be closed hats.

Experiment with different samples and velocities though, gives a bit more of a human touch.

I actually understand the big scissors thing...Is it not just a really compressed open hat and snare?

AHAHA!!! Yeah man you understand! xD
But... compressed how? In a group channel? or how do you acheive that snare/openhat shiney relationship, i have tried a little eq, and exciters on group channel... it helps but doesnt give me exactly what im looking for.

Thank you all guys, im starting to create nice chikichaka rythms!!

And about swing, im using cubase and/or ableton and i don't know how much to swing in % or which of the steps, say for example in a 16th swing measure, i should actually snap to the swing grid. I have not succeed yet in creating a nice rythm with swing in psytrance tempos. Screenshots would be very appreciated.

Sometimes I place another OHH 1/16 AFTER the main OHH(placed at every offbeat). Mostly is the same OHH, but shorter and faded out, and also much lower in volume. This mixed with some nice CHH(like at every kick + every offbeat + continuous 1/16 loop) can provide a solid basement for the track.

Plus: after you have an OK groove, create another channel and put a delay at this(short feedback, better if u have modulated delay for filtering across the loop). Then copy your snare to some points at the loop. Sometimes only 2/3 delayed snares at a 16 beat loop can also provide a nice "chichikaka" feel!

I usually just really compress the open hat, till it has a scraping character to it and find a snappy, toppy snare to complement it.

Listening to drumloops , playing percussions live and probably at a lower bpm might deepen your rythm feel.
