*Greek festivals feedback – one more summer of experience for all*

So the curtain has dropped for this summer`s festivalism in Greece and now that we`ve had our experiences , good or bad, it’s useful to share some constructive feedback and help make future better if we really care about the scene. And feedback is not just stating if we had a blast time or a fucked up one!

I like openairs more than indoor events and I know many ppl feel the same way. From my personal experience in foreign and local festivals I have concluded that a summer festival is not just a magical place, a killer lineup, a cheap ticket and that`s it. It`s not just the quantity and facilities offered that counts for the ppl, but rather the quality and the way of how things are managed during and after the event.

Ok, I won’t make any reference to our favourite subject for discussion about how primitive and lovely were the events of the good old past and what a disappointing situation we have nowdays! I just remember so vividly the fact that there was a tendency ,on behalf of both the crowd and the organisators, to struggle and make an outdoor gig work whatever the difficulties were. The harder the circumstances were (poor sound quality or bad weather or few attendants or artists missing etc) the greater were the efforts of ppl and promoters to finally make it through and have a kicking time.

A summer festival is a unique feeling, an anticipation, a good vibe for everybody, crowd, artists, promoters. I`ve been to Mandraki and Samothraki and I had a good time, I missed the Butterfly although I wished I had been there and have a clear opinion about it. I`ve spotted some strong and weak points of those festies from the things I`ve seen and heard, but I don`t mean to make any comparisons, neither vote for the best organization, this does not help.
I sense that greek promoters have only just begun to grasp the idea of the things necessary to ensure a memorable experience to the openair goers and call themselves professionals. I do hope they will use the knowledge for next years events (damn ,we have talked about it a thousand times, ppl have been offering their critic and suggestions and nobody pays any attention! ).
Still, I do praise the efforts and I don`t underestimate the risks and costs. I`m glad that Southern Greece have made the whole thing goin on this summer But there was a vigorous support from both the Athenian ppl and the rest of the country, this is very encouraging. Against my initial hopings, foreigners generally did not make a massive venue this year in greek festivals, I think they were very few, but maybe I`m mistaken.

No, it is not possible ever to satisfy every single person but I really feel sorry to see that none of the promoters of those three summer festivals ever bothered to post a message in here to say a couple of words after the event, to thank the ppl who joined the gigs or not, to thank the ones that helped them in every way they could,to say if they are satisfied with what they offered to the public, to make an honest self criticism and evaluation ( I`m not talking about merely apologizing or backstabbing others or even go public with their financial matters) and finally try to get rid of that `strictly business` retsinia out of them. Greece is a small country and the trance community is even smaller, what the fuck is so hard about establishing and keeping a civilized human contact ? ? ?

Well I have some personal remarks to add and I hope I will fail to mention everything !

- I have said it in a previous post and I will repeat it once more : no more ultra bombastic pre advertising just to gain impressions! It has resulted to making us suspicious when we see flyers and sites and posts and posters full of promises and promises never to be fulfilled….
- Poor tormented chillout stages, if only you had a voice to speak ! I really don`t know what to say about the chillouts I have seen or haven`t seen at all! What’s the point of making a chillout stage at all and leave it totally abandoned in disgrace? What’s the point of making an earthshaking main stage and not having a chillout stage at all for some peace of mind and body relaxation?
- I would appreciate it if some info was provided about local artists and djs included in the lineups, whether the play trance or chillout or electronica, house ,whatever! I am tired of reading Manolis X, Thanasis Y and not having a single clue about who they are, where they are from and what kind of music they are gonna play ! I don`t know, maybe we are supposed to know every dude from every corner of Greece ?
( I also hate to hear some after event gossips about local artists never getting paid if things do not go financially ok for the promoters, although foreigners always take their fat money and getting treated like gentlemen. . . )

- Shadowy places for camping are highly appreciated under the burning greek sun. I understand that we cannot make festivals in every virgin forest, but at least I think we can have one of two options : either a shadowy campers area or a main stage protected by the sun/rain at least to its half size. Festivals are made for the ppls pleasure and a dancefloor area comes alive only with ppl in it. Artists do not need extravagant decorations above their heads, just something simple and practical enough to protect them and the equipment from rain and heat. For goods sake ,show some respect to the happy freaks that burn their skins dancing under merciless temperatures (throwing water, if any, is ok but not enough!) and cannot even have one moment of rest in their boiling tents!

- A timetable for the lineup is neither unimportant nor a simple thing. My opinion is that it requires careful designing and programming, especially if the artists involved have broadly different musical styles, cause each part of the day has different acoustic and emotional demands. And yes, a timetable can actually be published before the fest , why not? Or else it should definitely be ready in photocopies for the ppl at the entrance at the beginning of the festival ( not delayed or hanged as a poster somewhere on the stage!!). Changes in the lineups if artists are missing cannot be predicted (can they?) but it is very important that timetables be held as responsibly as possible so that ppl do not get confused or pissed by trying to figure out who`s that guy up there performing now and who`s next.

- Drinkable water must never exceed a normal selling price. It’s just water, everybody drinks water and everybody will buy lots of water and whoever sells water will always make out a lot of money even if the price is below 0,50 euros for the small bottle! What is so complicated about keeping the water price as low as possible?
- I feel that ticket prices of this summer festies were high. No further comments here.

This is all I can remember till now, I`d like to see some more suggestions by other ppl even if they feel that all these have been said before too many times with no results. Sorry for another long post mates !
Have a nice productive and creative winter!

our crew read this post from the first day. We were still in samothraki. It is realy interesting with constructive critics and suggestions.

For our very first time we were part of an open air festival organisation this summer. Our first picture is that a proper outcome can only be achieved with hard team work and with skillful proffesional co operators.

Once more this topic is one of the most constructive we've ever read in this forum.

All the best

Sorry dear for not supporting your topic, it's just that I find it very difficult to get used the idea of returning from my vacations and I am not in the right mood. Besides what a huge text you got here!!!!! Bigger than Detox's posts!!
Anyway for the moment I don't have any suggestions, I couldn't agree more with you, you covered almost all the themes. Very objective point of view, good for you dear!           Don't Fuck With Me!

hello sahedelic mate,
this is your second post in this topic commenting about the size of my post! !

I understand that not everyone wishes (or is able) to spend precious time writing long stuff, but I think that everybody can at least READ long writings that have something to say. Right?

I browse the biggest part of the whole isratrance forum and, I have read hundreds of very long texts in various sections. I don't remember any ppl complaining about size matters.

Well ok, if you only meant to be sarcastic and humorous, you can ignore these words, I do have a sense of humor too!
Your funny side, I have read it a lot.
Your serious part is what I haven't seen yet.

Also, best regards to everyone who found this topic interesting enough to post an answer and to everyone who has chosen to remain silent for his own reasons. Keep the vibe!
