I really enjoyed 1st and 2nd Altom's albums, they were really serious and groovy, but the last one just sucked alien balls..
When I listened to Star-X "Prepare to Fly" it hit me so hard that I couldn't stop listenning to it for days, so psychedelic an groovy, morning, but still sounding serious and with funny samples, like the Cheech and Chong one... but then, they moved to Chemical Crew and turned to shit... for me, this one had the most critical change... |

damn straight. I was going to mention names but on second thought ..
I don't know, it seems theres a fine line between going commercial and expressing more musicality through your music. I had a friend musician named Anekcide who wrote some wicked tunes, then he studied music theory to better his music skills and WHAM! - he is now 'commercial' and 'selling out'.
what rubbish kak is that! He's gotten better in every respect, yet it falls outside of some peoples understanding. Now he deliberately tries to compensate by making tunes with minimum notation and ends up sounding like hundreds of other artists, just to get his old fans again.
This, I'm sure, has happened to many people and would inevitably lead to a 'bad' follow up album. maybe I'm wrong, but I know that if you end up sounding 'commercial' with a 'bad' album, you lose lots of your old fans but gain new ones too.
Spocko you right bout chemical crew though, Its amazing how often artists sign and unsign that label. Like Damage! He's back to SA and with MMD now, apparently the grass has always been greener here |

| and the mother of all bad follow ups ... hux flux ! cryptic crunch still rox my sox .. wat happened ? |
|
well, i must say that "division by 0" had some very intelligent and super well produced tracks.
cryptic crunch was a choc, but i wouldn´t say that after it was a bad follow up.
kdd still riding the wave i think.
IM also with a great converting vegetarians album.
(also right what rubix said, sometimes its more like a people misunderstanding than a bad follow up)
what IM did is more like a style change.

There is one undisputed winner on this category.
Skazi.
When he released his debut album Animal he gained great critics from all the fans of the psy trance scene, and i mean every fan out there no matter if he was into psy trance, full on,progressive, psy tech or whatever.
Yes the music was dance orientated and a little bit hard and fast but still it was something very fresh and it was a great suprise coming from Israel after a very long time.A tottaly new style of music and there seemed a new wave coming something much needed at that time within the scene.
That album became instantly an underground classic and Skazi became in a single night one of the most sought DJ's in the world.
What happened after that is one of psy trance scene's biggest mysteries and dissapointments if i may add.
Asher probably couldnt handle all this fame and money,he hanged out with the wrong people and he managed to become (musically speaking and with all the respect to him as a person) the clown of the scene being laughed on a daily basis on every single forum on the net.
Rock star attitude and demands, lousy and i mean LOUSY music productions, closing of Shaffel Music and creation of Chemical Crew, creation of many bad copycats and even destruction of great artists like Exaile for example who had so much more to offer but got destroyed when they joined Chemical Crew.
Skazi had the chance to change a lot in the psy trance scene and offer even more to the crowd but instead he chose a much different path sacrificing his talent and focusing on making more money and becoming more famous which if you ask me he could have achieved anyway if he was more careful into his music and marketing decisions in the beggining.
Such a pity for him and us.

True that! Animal still remains one of my favs! It was so freakin hard at that point of time. I guess it changed the sound of psytrance in some way or the other!
Skazi ... wtf man!!!

Indeed Skazi - Animal is one of the best albums ever released! The ideas and arrangement of sounds were unprecedented at the same, superb Right up there with albums by Psykovsky, Derango, Ghreg on Earth and what not! Really wish Asher continued in the same direction, with ideas along the old lines and today's production quality it would have definitely been something special. Quite a tragedy tho.

what happened to Sandman?
Was always one of my very favourites.Witchcraft is top 3 of psytrance history to me.
Well without evolution in your spirit you become dumb with along the time .Or if you make nonstop the same it should be a shame hehe
So I still very respect Sandman but newer works are not anymore touching me myself.
Still WitchCraft is a timeless masterpiece which I find is hard to find in this scene imo only.
