Hey I've got a question I couldn't find any answers yet. Has anyone experience with graphic tablets and the use of it in a sequenzer?
I'd imagine it pretty cool to draw notes, as I usually do alot of micro editing after recording realtime.
how does automation work, I'd really love to draw things instead of doing it with cc's and mouse.

you need two things:
1) access to the communication specs of your tablet. you need to know how it transmits its touch/draw information to your computer, then you can write a driver on your pc to read that out and to transform it to a form cubase/logic understands. this raises the 2nd problem:
2) you need to know if such things as drawing notes is possible from 'outside' your sequencer (without the mouse using the note editor), for that you should check with e.g. steinberg. the simplest way would be the driver idea translating tablet information to midi commands, but i don't see how it should be possible to draw notes using midi. maybe the sequencers offer some access using a dedicated sdk (analog to the vst sdk)
and of course you should think about what new things you gain by doing this. drawing notes sounds interesting (but for that you'd certainly need information to go back to your tablet (the piano-roll lines etc.)), but adjusting synth parameters and mixer settings: for that you have got plenty of controllers out there.
best wishes |

hmmm doesn't sound as easy as I imagined.
All I know is that one of my buddies busy with 3d stuff is using his tablet like a normal mouse in his windows enviroment. Browser, Winamp and just about everything else is functioning.
Thanx for your answer. Gonna find out more about this topic, that's for sure.

I have a tablet because I do graphic design, but it's only use is for 'flowing' smooth line drawing and pressure sensitive input in photoshop. It works well in 3d programs because you can use large sweeping motions to spin objects and camera views as the acceleration of the cursor as controlled by the mouse is different to a tablet (there is no acceleration, the screen is mapped to a square pad)
For accurate tiny-box clicks when 'drawing' notes in a sequencer the accuracy depends on hovering your hand over the tablet pad - it's totally the wrong tool for the job. In fact I couldn't imagine a scenario where you'd need to do any actual note drawing?
I wouldn't waste anytime worrying about it
The best way is with a midi keyboard and even then using a mouse is easier than a tablet in a sequencer. |

thx for the answer.
well I play most of my stuff realtime, quantize it. But when I draw notes, the outcome of my music is totally different. That happens to me alot, with different methods I get different results.
As I'm planning to get a graphic tablet anyway (because of photoshop) I just thought about the possibilities and got excited.
Your points Tomos are right, small boxes might be awkward to work with. I simply thought about the precision while drawing, expanding or shrinking notelenght. That's what I always feel cumbersome when working with a mouse.

yes of course, you can use the normal 'mouse facilities' the tablet provides: you can move the cursor and click, but then, that's the same as using a mouse, in the context of your sequencer (of course, for drawing, it is entirely a different matter, there the tablet is way better for movements) |

there used to be a driver getting around made by Borogrove called 'miditab', which effectively enabled you to use an intuos tablet as an x-y controller under win98 - i tried searching for an update for xp but there doesnt seem to be one available...
i havent actually tried the old driver under xp yet - who knows maybe it works anyway?
cheers
