no internet in main computer is a must, i agree.
My both laptop are totally tweaked, i mean, in windows. Usually, a default install of windows, has maybe 16 processes runing in background.
In my configuration, only has 3. This configuration help me a lot, a good percentage of ram memory is free with that.
U guys can check your services in the control pannel, administrative tools, services.

Well my main pc is quite STRONG and actually i only needed maybe to use the second as a master fx i mean i send the master sounds over there and then process it there...My main one like i said can easily manage everything i throw at him...
Yes they are close to each other but one is for net and the other just for music.... |

well tomos not everyone has the cash for a quad cpu haha but if u got a good cpu and a old one laying around u might aswell put it to use right instead of gathering dust so 2 cpus are difinitly good to have if u dont have the cash for a mack'ed out cpu, just my two cents |

I only have Dual Core which is fine for my needs, but I've found the Intel 2.4 Quad for under £160, which I think is an amazing bargain. Especially since it overclocks up to 3.2Ghz on stock cooling.
I work in IT, and I have plenty of old CPU's lying around (around 300), I was thinking of making them into a coffee table or something like this guy.

Every time we have an office upgrade I just get to keep all the old stuff, at first I wanted to make use of all of it, I built render farms, webservers, huge storage boxes.. but every month old stuff just looks more and more obsolete. It isn't worth trying to catch up by cobbling old boxes together, for a fraction of the performance.
Psyaudionamics; I have no idea what you mean about having audio on one and midi on the other. Core2 processor is more than twice as fast as the fastest Pentium4, and if you ever upgrade you're likely to go back to one computer anyway. Sounds like you've just made things overcomplicated.
Anyway, the Nehalem 8 core CPUs are due sometime next year, so expect further price drops.

You'd be surprised how hard it is to smash the glass out of a TV or old CRT monitor.
I threw one against concrete - it bounced and broke my foot. Not a scratch on it. |

i work with hardware so i run one cpu just the midi...
and some vst with lots of fx or synths that usually are cpu hogs... the midi doesnt use up more cpu so it makes that cpu set... the other one which is the main cpu is sync as master and records the audio from the synths that were programmed on the other one, so now i only have audio on my main cpu giving me more view on my huge monitor without the need for much scrolling since its only audio no midi tracks around, they're on my right monitor the center monitor is the sequence of recorded audio and other vst;s left monitor has the rme console and also vst's
just the way i work...
hope u understood that tomos kinda hectik i guess for some but to me it's a great set-up... |

I always found bare midi and audio tracks take up almost no processing power. VST's and effects use them. So I don't know how you decide what goes on which computer. If it works for you, it works..
