Oh my! All of us who make - or try to make - trance, have been there I guess ! The clue is to get rid off thoughts and concepts that stand in the way for creation. If you WANT, or better if you NEED to express yourself through music, go ahead and do it. Don't compare your stuff with others. You don't want to sound like another. I think you should sound YOU. Whatever this means. And don't be in a hurry (oh, I must finish this...today), try to take your time, and expand your ideas. Check again what you've done, and then enrich or correct what you think you could. Listen to other people's comments, and ENDURE !!! The artist is always exposed. Good luck!           Bring yourselves into the light

other_reality, very good points!
i agree with everything. there is only one problem - the advice not to sound like another is difficult to interpret cause in 4 to the floor dance beat music you are not really free to do what you want. and i think that it is not so bad to immitate your idols a bit cause it gets something different anyway. you will never be able to copy anything.
so, i´d say that it´s ok to try to immitate some sounds but try to put your personal spice into it with selfrecorded samples, an own layering and arrangement and some edges and unpredictability.

Yes, for learning technique it is very important to imitate.
At least for me it was            Signature

Deejayridoo , the point you must understand is that noone ask from you to create mainstream there are alot of labels who wait for some thing spetial and non mainstream as you call it .

Musician is someone who ppl know and not the one who just produce for himself .............

so you need to fight reality and find label for underground = non mainstream stuff get relesed .

wish you luck ................

other subject

I never saw anyone who produce the same thing than other do , we imitate or try to create same thing but in the end we create something else because human ear can't recognize the way of synthesis till now so .............. learn whatever style you like , imitate , create your own everything that makes you comfortable to learn ...... because it is very important to feel comfortable while learning , producing or other form of art ............

i found myself stranded several times. now i learned to trigger my fantasy and creativity. one thing that helps me much and may help you as well is reading books. with a book you are completely alone. you cant hear whats happening but you can build your own soundtrack. i often play around with sounds in my head, and even if the final output isnt similar to it at all, the imaginery sound helped me to develop my ideas.

Certainly, most of the people who make music are inspired by others before them. Imitation, or ideas may come from other musicians for sure ! But, the key is not to imitate. Would you like to sound like XXX ? I do not think so, but, in the end its up to you to decide why you are making music in the first place. Is it because, as i mentioned before, you need to do so, or is it because maybe, say, you want to impress some friends, or you have dreams to be on stage and earn respect and money from the "scene"? Don't get me wrong, but I believe that being a musician is all about expressing YOURSELF, making art, a very laborious and thinking process in which to succeed in, ofcourse, you need to have a technical background "we work with computers and synths, they are machines after all" but one should also be an artist, in the true sense of the word. Imitation will get one started, technically, giving him a headroom to explore his potential, getting to know how to express himself through all this sounds, patterns and programming tricks. Once this has been reached, it should be discontinued as a process, and initiate a new, much more challenging one. The process of self-expression and new creation. And I do not think that sticking with "dancefloor rules" is right. There are no rules in music, i'd like to believe...Unless you want to end up making music for justin timberlake...( he he, something to lighten it up ! ) So, finally, my conclusion is :
Music is inside everyone, and everything. It's a gift from Gods, and it's there for us to enjoy. A musician has an added task, to explore and innovate. The tools of the trade, are just lying there waiting for you to give them life, and a meaning of existence. These are tools for discovery and expression of one's self. When this process is honest, and pure, only then can the artist have a glimpse of the cosmic essence of the music. When one's trying to sound like another, and TRIES to be something like "dancefloor compatible" or "label compatible" or whatever, he misses the point and becomes a professional. A "businessman". If it's this that someone's after, then its cool, but then again it's not unique,it's not art...The payback is mostly money. Not feelings. Well that's what i had to say, sorry to bother you guys with all this long blah-blah...           Bring yourselves into the light

well said other_reality!! but it could've been shorter
its very true i think...you all will agree that creating a ordinary 145 bpm floorstomper isnt too hard...but for me every track i do has to have a personal meaning to me, it must be something that touches me everytime i listen to it and also, it usually reflects my feelings during the making (so it can be that a track starts angry and hard, but later gets lightened up, when i'm cooled down mentally again). so to create something meaningful and unique is pretty a task for everyone..

You should keep an acoustic guitar near for "downs" like this. Or get another hobby besides music (I like cooking, and sometimes wish I was Jamie Oliver )

Always good to alternate with something else.
