I have noticed that many of the 'good' Dj's today just play good tracks one after another. play 20 killer tracks in 2 hours and thats it, you are a rockstar!

I mean there are very few of them who can actually amaze the crowd by their mixing skills, most of them today only beat match, fadeout-fadein the next track and they are good!

This is not a talent bashing post, but can we list down some good Dj's here who can be notified as Super Talents purely with their mixing and Dj'in skills?

I do not beat match.... i mess up with the beats first (subtly) & then gel in with the other sounds..... bah, but i am not a professional DJ....

and yes its always exciting good to experience something different from the jockeys rather than usual beat match & fading business, it's much more that that!

For me, i always try to make any track sound different, everytime i play that particular track.

I don't think straight beatmatching and fading in/out is a bad thing if the track selection is on point.

There's a lot of factors that can go into a set. If you're playing at a party it matters what time you slot is. If you're truly good you can read the crowd and play tracks according to their reaction (if people are dancing, keep playing what you are, if they aren't take a different route). There's not much need to get fancy twisting knobs and throwing faders since it is usually intrusive to the flow of the mix. If you're recording a mix, play tracks that flow along or generate some emotion/reaction to the music. Recorded mixes are usually more themed to a specific sound rather than to a crowd response.

Lately I've been mixing out only using the eq knobs, I generall leave the volume fader where it's at. If you have a good enough ear you can use the eq knobs to control which frequency of sounds is faded out and how fast/slow they are taken away. I love doing this and it makes the mixes sound much more unique.

But the post is not about mixing is about track selection!!!

There is only a very very few number of DJ who have amazing track selection in the world and you can learn how to be the best mixer technically but if your track selection is average or poor you ll be a local dj only! NOT that being a local dj is bad because I only a bedroom dj!

Is like they say Either you have it or you dont!

If I like the tracks they play, then I like them as a DJ, however they choose to mix them. I only have a problem when they bring a track in audibly "off"..in that case I would rather just hear them mix the intros and outros. Mixing technique is worthless to me if I don't like the tunes they're playing..           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

Well the music they play is most important, a well planned set can be so beutiful...

Incorporating a theme through the mix can also be very rewarding... But amaze the crowd with mixing skills ? For that go to hiphop or turntablism..

-*- You didnt move this topic, you made a new one...
