My tip sounds like a joke, but it is meant seriously: Practise! |

Brett from Tibet's post on the previous page lays it down pretty sweetly. I'd say for rock you'd be using his method of mixing intros and outros.
Above all, have fun.
Know your music. And definitely practise - it's good to have something up your sleeve at least to get you started.

Yeah, having fun, mostly leads to good results, if one is still conscious of course. |

The thing is, that I have zero DJ'ing experience. What I plan to do is mixing live the songs that are already coherent with each others, and whichs introes and outros can fuse together relatively seamlessly. On the other hand, i'll be preparing/mixing in advance the tracks that need precise timing and are trickier to mix. |

DJin Chill Out is very easy and very difficult at the same time. It can be very easy, if you only look at the technical mixing aspects (sometimes Intro/Outro is enough). But it can be very heavy, if one has no feeling for the flow. I think, that it is much harder to find a good flow, if you compare it to trance music. In Chill Out tracks can be so different. It is amazing. So it can be a lot harder to create a flow. |

Hey. Everything went much better than expected. It was priceless seeing lots of heads nod, bang, and people chilling out to the music I was playing. I got a lot of compliments and questions about songs.
Mostly played obscure psychedelic rock/neo-psychedelia, but put a couple of recognizable tunes (White Rabbit, Purple Haze...) for people to sing along to.
I kind of hesitated to put some heavy psych/stoner metal in there, which tend to have heavy guitar distortion and fast bluesy soloes ... but people seemed to appreciate that pure rocking-out material the most.
I'd like to thank everyone who answered my question. All your responses were valued. I did practice a lot, and mainly concentrated on the flow the set, rather than mixing technicalities. Kept it mostly intro/outro mixing.
Peace. |
