what do people mean when they say a track has a good story? do they mean how it progresses? |

It's a narrative analogy. Think like in opera or plays like Peter and the Wolf. Instruments and sounds serve as scenarios / actors that interact with each other in a tension - release structure and successfully deliver a message (idea / emotion) to please and entertain an audience. |

as well as that mate does it flow and progress in the way a story does. Y'know, rises and falls, changes of pace etc. Just this very evening I was chatting with a dude and I said to him "there are only 3 rules to good storytelling-good start, good middle and good ending." A good storyteller knows how to blend these things together.
How many times have I listened to Metal bands and thought "holy shit! great riffs, bollocks song"
That kinda thing.

its all metaphorical, you could also think about the locations a track takes you. Sometimes it is easier for me to create the proper atmosphere when thinking about it in this way.
I imagine the different passages of the song as if I were on a train or in a car, or better yet a roller coaster zooming through different landscapes or cities or whatever, then try to make it a really cool ride...

in my opinion it is the progression that makes you feel curious about what happens next in a track and therefore make you listen to music on and on
