Good ressource for learning synthesis?

I was wondering if some of you guys knew some good ressources to learn synthesis in a practical way, as I'm grewing tired of either using (sigh) or modifying presets, as well as simply trying things out on an INIT patch without having any insight of what I'm actually doing (even if I managed to get some good sounds this way).

I don't need to know the whole theory behind every concept, I'm more looking for a straightforward approach that would give me good infos on how to make bass, leads, pads, fx.

I don't mind learning some basic theory, I understand that it's still a necessity.

Everything's fine, websites, books, videos, online lessons, advices, whatever

Thanks for your much appreciated help (as always, I should add).

EDIT : Oh, and a noobish question, I don't really understand what's the difference between single and multi mode on hardware synth, could somebody explain that to me ?

Go to soundonsound website and search for synth secrets and try to read all parts of it (about 30 parts)..           http://www.myspace.com/djacidkills

Depends on your level of experience, but I still recommend reading a few articles on basic subtractive synthesis, then Reaktor + tutorials. Takes a lot more time and effort than just reading about concepts, but I think you'll learn more. A decent Doepfer or ARP 2600 would be even better if you have access to one.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

Yeah I read on the other thread that Reaktor could be a nice way to learn synthesis.

I guess the tutorials you're refering to are on the official website?

Oh, and do you guys know a good and as simple as possible DIY hardware modular synth ? A friend of mine is very good with electronics, so I think this could be a good way to explorer this world from a new perspective !

I've always wanted to go on the Rob Papen synth Masterclass in NL, but I don't think it's in English.

I've been watching his website waiting for his synth programming DVD, but its been delayed for over a year and the release date keeps changing. I'd definitely buy it ever comes out.

He's really friendly, a synth genius and when he was developing Predator we chatted on KVR about the psy presets section. He definitely knows his stuff when it comes to synth programming.. his music is pretty bad though (sorry!) guess hes more technical than creative.

You can use the NI tutorials and post for help on their forum..there are also several other good tutorials out there. Try googling for free ensembles/instruments to reverse engineer. I would start with the tutorial on how to build a Nord Lead here:

http://www.audionetwork.be/tutorials/reaktor/

I've built a couple small modular synths and a few Eurorack modules..these are all good resources:

Synth DIY:

Good module distributor:

I'm also quit noob..but I tried to find some patches that I really liked on a good synth..Then I wrote down all the settings in a word document..Like:

Osc Sector:
Wave:Saw
PW:65
Detune:72
bla bla ..

Filter Sector:
Type:LP
Cutoff:100
A:27 D:60 S:127 R:120
Bla..Bla

And then I printed the document and startet from INIT on the synth..With the use of the document i then started from scratch to build up my favourite patches..after tweaking patches for a while..i started to get it..and i could without looking create similar patches and experiment with own ones..but I used this method in combo with reading some basic synth programming theory..but you have some good links=)

Good luck mate!
