About this side-chaining thing, with the kick driving the compressor on the bass: Doesn't this only work with short kicks ? I mean, if you use a kick with a long 'bass-tail', that lasts for a quarter note (like a pure sine-wave for instance) the compressor will be compressing all the time.
If you use eq on the input, so the compressor only reacts to the higher frequencies of the kick, you will still need to remove the low frequencies of the bass so it doesn't clash with the 'bass-tail' of the kick right ? |

Most trance use fairly short kicks.
With a high BMP and straight beat it would overlap the bass too much otherwise.
A quarter not kick would definatly need to be shortened.
But in the end it's was sounds good for you that works.
To completly remove any overlapping shouldn't be done on routine I belive.
If you would sidechain the high frequencies, wou could of course increase the release of the compressor until you find it sounds good. |

Thnx for the tip. Most of the time i try to get my 'bass' from the kick and remove bass from the bass-line to make it fit. Maybe i'll try it the other way around this time. |
